Default Spider "crazing" On Srt Spoke Wheels

MY ''BABY'' IS ABOUT 3 YEARS OLD NOW WITH 18,000 MILES, CITY-COUNTRY, IN BROWARD COUNTY FLORIDA. THE CAR IS EXPOSED TO SALT AIR AS I LIVE DIRECTLY ON THE OCEAN.
WITHIN THE PAST MONTH, I HAVE NOTICED A WHITE ''LACEY'' OR SPIDER WEB CRAZING FORMING ON THE OUTSIDE SPOKES AND RIM OF THE WHEELS. IT IS SMOOTH TO THE TOUCH, AND APPEARS TO BE UNDER WHAT I PRESUME IS CLEARCOAT ON THE WHEELS.
THERE IS NO ROUGHNESS TO IT, AND IS ONLY ON THE OUTSIDE SURFACE.
HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED THIS???
I USE NO WHEELCLEANERS OR SOAP OF ANY SORT, ONLY WATER.
IS THIS A CLEARCOAT DEFECT?
IS THIS COVERED BY ANY WARRANTIES?
HELP,HELP,HELP!!!!

from what your explaining its similar to what i had when i bought mine. after 1000 miles i was cleaning the wheels and noticed this it looked as if the clearcoat was peeling but was smooth. I went to the dealer they took some pics of the wheels where it was bad and sent them to chrysler for approval under warranty. Within a day i had a call back that they were ordering me all new wheels. best of luck with the problem

I noticed a small area on my wheels also...wonder if it is the same.

Do you have pics of the problem?

Thanks,
Shawn

You may re-check that - the problem may be covered under the corrosion warranty and not the 3/36.

Worth a shot.

I believe that I have this too, I'll try and snap a picture tomorrow and post it up here. New wheels sounds good to me, even though they only have 1800+ miles on them.

Jimbo, I am in Miami and other then road rash I have not experienced the problem you noted. You should try and come up to New Symna on March 15. We have around 28 meeting for a GTG. Here is the link for you to check out.

My wheels have the same thing. I hope I can get Southpoint to cover it.

Here's the picture from mine as promised. Looks like another warranty trip to the dealer is in my future.

Looks just like mine...only mine aren't quite as severe yet. There's a few small spots...

Thanks for the pic, and keep us posted on the warranty luck.

Thumbs up Re: Spider "crazing" On Srt Spoke Wheels

I have had it on several vehicles and I took the action of cleaning the coating off with Acetone and ELBOW GREASE>>>>>>>>. When it was clean I polished the bare metal to my satisfaction then recoated the wheel with aircraft grade clear urethane paint. Its dooable but you gotta want to do it. With this much cleaning wear gloved, its not sissy to be safe.

Option #2 is to do research on wheel remanufacturers and get pricing, Iam just an old hot-rodder. If I cant do it, Ill learn how like, TIG welding, painting or what ever. Woody

You could get them stripped and hard anodized or clear anodized. Wouldnt be cheap but it would solve the problem for good.

How bad were yours? In reference to the picture of mine above of course. Just seeing if it will be worthwhile to go to the dealer sooner than later.

My rear wheels were worse. I had stripes that when all the way across the spoke, as well as covering the entire open area by the valve stems. Both are being replaced. The fronts have two two millimeter marks, and are not going to get replaced unless they get worse. I can send you my invoice information if you need. Good luck!

*brings thread back from the dead*

Finally had my rear wheels replaced the other week under warranty. Fronts don't look too bad yet.
