Ugh...

My mom has been driving my SRT for the past couple of weeks while I've been on the west coast on vacation and also working on getting my 745 traded for an Escalade...

She apparently ran a couple of tanks of regular in it, maybe more and while I don't *remember* the car pinging before, I can't actually be sure because I never really listened for it as I usually have the radio turned up.

Anyhow, I filled it up to about 3/4 of a tank with Premium and I just filled it up to full again yesterday from empty and I STILL have some pinging. The car is doing marvelous fuel economy (a little under 20 in the city) for a performance car so no complaints there, and there doesn't SEEM to be a performance loss... but that telltale little pinging noise, almost like a light valve tick or exhaust leak is definitely there.

It is MOST prevalent as I'm increasing in speed and press the throttle in 3rd gear.

Has anyone experienced this or is my car broken?

Mine has been doing that since the day I bought it with 18 miles. (10K miles now) I use 91 octane gas.

 

It may go away as long as the tank isn't polluted with more regular !
The anti-knock sensors/ECU should pick up on the octane increase & settle down eventually.

The biggest problem is that you really can't yell at your Mom!

 

Fill her up with premium from either Citgo or Chevron, since they are the best when it comes to anti-knock fuels.

 

could be just the brand of gas you bought..... I had a firebird that made all kinds of crazy noises when I put Texico in it of any grade......



I run nothing but regular in my SRT6. I have never heard a ping or knock and I average about 20 21 in stop and go traffic back and forth from work every day.
