If I did not throw it away I have a spare overflow tank about that size in the garage somewhere.

 

Great write-up!
I have been working on this mod and ran into a couple of hiccups.
My meziere tank showed up and the 1/8" pipe thread vent tube hole threads were a bit buggered up and I can't seem to find a 1" vacuum/fluid cap for the overflow tank. Arg!
I fixed the threads on the vent tube, but can't find the cap......

BrianBrave, or anyone else who has done this mod, where did you find the cap for the stock overflow tank?

Which port on the stock overflow tank?

The small vent tube on the fill neck (black) or the feed ports (white) on the bottom?

The unused radiator hose port on the bottom of the factory expansion tank.....the hose that came off of this port transfers to the bottom of the new expansion tank, correct?

Yes. Then you have to plug the one on the factory tank. I made a SNUG fitting plug and then put a rubber cap from the hardware store over that with a clamp. May be overkill, but no way it will leak on the IC circuit....

 

That will worK - you might also find some "end caps" at the auto parts store - usually hanging next to the vacuum plugs and tee fittings...

 

actually, I got mine at the auto parts store too....... hardware... auto parts... same thing...

 

Thanks guys! I live out in the country and they don't stock much out of the norm type stuff, even at HomeDepot or Advaced Auto.
You really have to get creative or shop online. Life at the beach I guess.....

Perhaps you could cut a small length of hose the size of the port you wish to plug.

Clamp one end on the port, then clamp an appropriate size bolt in the other?

 

Yes....it is a bit red neck but it will work.

 

I was digging around in my garage for something less "Red Neck" and I found these two plugs I purchased at Kragen sometime back.

These fit just fine on the intercooler fitting - so I'm sure they make a larger size for the radiator fitting...

That is exactly what I am looking for, just haven't found the correct size.


edit: I got the car all put back together today, finally!
I found a 1" 90 barbed elbow at the hardware store (grey plastic) that had a screw fitting (female end) on the one end. I purchased it and a plug and a 1" inner diameter piece of radiator/vac hose. Slid the piece of vac hose onto the tank and the barb fitting (already plugged off) and secured both ends with hose clamps. No getto fabulous work using bolts as plugs needed! Nice!!! Worked like a charm, with no leaks! Followed BB's other instructions about trimming the stock radiator hose, so it wouldn't kink to slid onto the new tank....again, worked like a charm! I ended up cutting mine right below the 2nd 90 degree bend in the hose from the stock tank and it fit perfectly onto the fitting on the bottom of the new Meziere Tank.

-one word of caution here, my meziere tank needed to have the vent tube threads chased with a 1/8" npt thread tap. The threads were flat looking and the vent tube fitting wouldn't screw in more than 1 or 2 threads.

Went for a drive and everything was great....well nearly.....I either didn't have the dipstick pushed all of the way in or it started to blow out a bit. I had a bit of oil on the intake, supercharger and hood liner. I have it zip tied into place right now until I get a "purty" fix for it!

Krzy, I had the re-tap the threads on my Meziere tank too... my fittings screwed in fine, I just didnt like that they didnt screw all the way in to look finished. .....

 

I know this is an old thread, but I think it's the best place to ask this particular question with all the information already here.

I was planning on separating the two systems myself and did some research on how modern cooling systems operate and the purpose for a overflow/surge tank was.

I found it is simply an extension of the engine cooling system and gives air space for fluid expansion during higher operating temperatures. This holds true for the "Charge Air Cooling System" or Inter Cooler system.

My question is this. If I leave the OEM tank and block the Inter Cooler port on the bottom or replace it with a Standard/Limited Crossfire OEM tank without the extra bung. Could I simply add a smaller additional tank and route the two lines to it with an appropriate pressure cap, thus isolating the Inter Cooler system and giving that system it's own tank. I was thinking 7lbs for the cap as it should never even get close to boiling anyway.

I am including diagrams based both on those presented above AND actual viewing of the engine bay. The OEM diagram is as accurate as I can make it. As to the modification diagram, it may seem a bit more cluttered, but that is to retain the OEM tank and plumbing and only move TWO hoses and replace one 3/8" tee fitting with a straight fitting.

Comments? Advice? Good idea? Am I crazy? (I lean toward the latter... )

Yep, I use Visio for LOTS of stuff...

 

That's how I set mine up. I have a small tank to fill and vent the system, but the coolant doesn't flow through the tank. Just a reservoir I guess. I have a vented cap on it, I think it helps bleed the system of trapped air bubbles.

edit: actually if you removed the thicker red line from your New Surge Tank, that's what I have.

 

I also just added a seperate tank for my intercooler system. I don't have a vented cap and it has worked fine so far (maybe 1.5 yrs now). I made my seperate tank with a big mouth so I can fill it with ice at the track (screen in supply line).
