Default Thinkin' about picking up a SRT-6...

Hey all,

Haven't posted in a while but I have been lurking around the board reading everything I can. In a few months I am aiming to buy an SRT-6. I will be more than happy with stock performance and would really like to focus on making sure everything is in proper working order before I bite into the mods. I would like to know what I can expect to go wrong besides the IC pump, and this transmission leak I hear the SRT-6's have, whats the deal with that? I also know about the headlight hazing, rattly door latch, underdoor rust. Is this car prone to sensor failure? How much do sensors usually run for? I notice a few members have had trouble with rough running/idling, and hard starting and that scares me is that a common occurance or is it a hit or miss kinda thing? I don't plan on beating on this thing, very much, and I already have an extensive knowledge of automotives and my dad knows a lot about mercedes systems (S600). Consumer Report and Edmunds.com have said this is an "at or above average car" and I wouldn't know why they would lie about that, but you never know. Well, let me hear your opinions and thanks!

Hiya Wulf,

There have been several issues noted with the SRT-6 on this forum over the years,
but none have been overly serious or hard to fix (once the techs know what the problem
is). I've been driving my SRT-6 for just at 4 years now, and have had very limited
problems. I had the tranny leak, and I had the IC pump go out. Other than that, I've
had nothing serious. I have read of at least one Supercharger problem, but would
consider that a rare occurrence. These are really great cars.

Good luck on your future purchase plans.

Coyote

ditto on that... The transmission leak- if you did have to fix yourself would be like a $10 dollar fix, it's just an O-ring seal.

I have 30k miles on my roadster over 4 summers and no problems. It's been very reliable. I put about 5k on my SRT6 this summer and ran into the dreaded intercooler problem -- it's currently at the dealer for warranty repair. Otherwise it's been fine. If I had any doubts about their reliability, would I have bought a third one?

Evening, Zach,

Don't wait, don't hesistate: buy one.
Remember, this is a Mercedes engine, hand built - one tech., one engine - and will probably last as long as you want it to. The Crossfire, Coupe or SRT, still ranks as one of the best, most exciting cars I've ever driven (so far!).
Speaking from personal experience only: I've had no serious issues with either car. I've had the CD head replaced twice & the passenger speaker replaced, both under warranty. Beyond tires (which are expensive) & oil changes (which can be expensive) nothing else has gone wrong.
Good luck!

The only problems I've had are the Seat Heaters, Outside Temp Sensor, For Light reflectors, Cracked Brake Rotors, and Cup Holder. Nothing Mechanical. None of these I would consider serious. I still have the original IC Pump at 32,000 miles, so I suspect that will go any day now.

I guess I'm the lucky one with the SC problem. That said, I still love this car. After taking the car to both the Chrysler and Benz dealers and both saying that I needed a new SC, I got a used one that had 18K miles on it and did the install myself. Sad to report that car makes the same top side grinding noise as with the original SC. In my opinion there is A) nothing wrong with either, B) same thing wrong with both or c) something else causing the noise. I have another thread on this problem and will be posting complete details on how to chageout the SC in a future post and on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehxL0JaYM9A . New SC with new Code-3 bearing (same as what I had done previously to my SC) sounds identical to the video. Bummer..... no real bummer. At least I didn't spend the $6000 that the Chrysler dealer wanted or the $3700 the MB dealer wanted.

Even with the SC noise, this car still runs really fast, a bit bumpy on secondary roads. In the 1 year I have had my car, only one tire air pressure sensor needed to be replaced (warranty) and the transmission leak o-ring seal.

Thanks for all the replies! These sure sound like great cars and I look forward to buying one in the upcoming months. If I have anymore questions you all will be the first to hear them! Thanks.

I had a supercharger problem. It was actually my clutch that failed. My dealer replaced the whole supercharger assy and now all is well. Supercharger failures happen but they are far rarer than IC pump failures.

No problem mechanically with mine. Only heated seat failure. Owned for almost 3 years. Only 9850 miles on it. Bought it with 275 miles. Great car!!!!!!
