Looks like the AMX and XKR fiberglass hoods are on hold for a ( L O N G ) time. For you factory hood chopping brave members, you can buy the vents from Jaguar. They are for a 2009 Supercharged Jaguar XKR. (4.2 Liter, 420 horsepower)! You'll need to purchase a left and right. Part numbers> C2P14034XXX Finisher-Air Vent and C2P14033XXX Finisher-Air Vent. They are actually engine heat vents. If you look down into the open slots,its a straight view of the pavement. There's not hardly any areas under our hood that I would feel confortable with rain pouring thru. With a few beers, I'll come up with some kind of rain drainage deflector and still allow engine heat to escape. There made in Spain and the plastic cost like gold. List for $77.22 per side. Total with tax included> $165.64. Jaguar wouldn't even cut a penny off the cost. (Damn I wished we could get 10 members for a group buy for the AAR custom fiberglass hood for $650.00 so I wouldn't be cutting up my factory hood! Moparrbust got me hooked on this style hood. He's creating an awlsome project of half Crossfire and half Jaguar hood. He's got pictures of his project posted. HINT>> If we are extra nice to him,maybe he would carefully trace out onto paper the actual hood vent openings, then mail us the pattens so we want make any wrong cuts. I've checked out a custom shop and was given some tips for you do-it-your-selfers. Locate the spot you like. Don't cut into braces,near the center spine or the recessed grooves on our hood. Install between our grooves. Use a couple layers of blue painters tape on the area to be cut so as not to scratch the paint. HINT>Hopefully get a to scale pattern from Moparrbust, then trace the pattern. They say to use a rotozip grinder (HomeDepot) and it'll cut out the pattern like butter with good control. This type grinder kinda favors the design of a wood router. I'm going to do this mod as soon as I purchase and install the Needs Wings intake manifold. Don

 

too bad there is no flaps or rain stops. Looks like the carbon fiber intake that they sit on is out. ANYONE FOR RAIN GOING DIRECTLY INTO THERE INTAKES ???

 

I know I wouldnt cut up an oem hood, i'd get an extra and cut that up.

Why would rain get in your intake if you have vents? Most people have either converted their intakes to Needswings or SL55 type which will readily suck up plenty of water from behind the front grille(even with a stock hood). I could run my car with the hood off in the rain and suck no more water in the intake than with it in place.




*People with completely stock intakes could possibly suck some water in depending on placement of the vents in the hood.

 

We were talking about hooking the intakes straight to the vents I dont know if I am confused or if you are confused IT was on your orginal thread I was saying you could take a set up like the SL intakes take the tubes that go behind the grille and send them right up to the vents. in other words when you pop you hood you see two large openings going straight up and down and either come off the top of the modified air boxes or connect to the tube hook up location off of the front of the air boxes. Either way you would have to wide openings feeding air to the intakes directly. You are going from parallel to verticle a heavy rain would no questions asked make for a bad day possible water lock

 

LOL.. I have the Needs Wings CAI. I was referring to the new aluminum intake manifolds. It looks like the Needs Wings aluminum intake manifolds are taller than the factory aluminum manifilds. During heavy rains water will drip thru the XKR vents onto the engine unless some type of deflector or drainage is installed. Thanks... Don

 

Ahhh; we'll just call it mutual confusion. LOL. The XKR vents are way too small to provide enough airflow for the intakes to breathe through. They would be perfect for venting a decent amount of heat from the engine bay though.

 

I agree. The vent openings are way to small for a air combustion supply. Although with the AAR Fiberglass hood,we could have requested the opening be made larger for CAI with a water trap air box. Some want the vents for a cold air supply while some want them for just removing under hood heat. Jaguar XKR uses them for removing under hood heat only. There positioned so rain water drips straight thru and misses the engine. When we install them in our factory hood,something in our cramped up engine compartment is gonna get wet. I just perfer the rain water not to drip onto a new set of Need Wings aluminum manifolds or anything electrical. The vents flanges do slightly drop down from the hood and snap in. If the Needs Wings manifolds are actually taller than stock,may have to choose another location so the vent snap-ins on the bottom want hit the manifolds when the hood is shut. By spring time,I'll definately be doing this mod with some type of water drainage. I look as our hoods being a simple but costly bolt on item that can be purchased later if wanted to change back to factory stock. Don

Note the date on the pics, Nov 1, 2008. He just started yesterday. It will be interesting to see what Woody comes up with.

I still kind of like the MB vents along the back edge near the windshield for heat vents.

I saw this on HDDP's gallery. This hood looks pretty good and is sublte. Dont know if this type of vents would fit between the strakes on our hood.

Fiberglas hood is the alpha test bed, I can cut it up and not shed a tear especially if it goes potty. Plan vents that are rain safe and vent the radiator heat by natural draft. Model is to see clearance to the goodies under neath where its hard to measure, so I made a 1/2 hood. Due in the spring, think Charger hood like , zero height design, to be continued, Woody

Probable patch to drop in existing hood, for lowest total cost, you know me. Party on dudes and dudettes.
