Exclamation U-Joints Cost $1,800??...Holy Cow!!!

I have a pulsating vibration in my car when I get above 60mph. It shake the entire car, not just the steering, is present when cruising, and not so much when accelerating. I already had the tires balanced, so it appears to possibly be the U-Joints, as suggested by PaulW.

Here is my main question...My dealer just said that they haven't checked to see if that is problem yet, but that it would be $1800 to replace my U-Joints! WTH! That sounds EXTREMELY high to me. Anyone have any knowledge in this area of these cars?

I have replaced entire driveshafts before, and they are only a few hundred dollars. Though be it they were not on crossfires.

I can't say I have with this car, but for my mustang they were under $20 for the parts, and took about half an hour to do. That sounds intensley high to me too. I would go to a different dealer for a second opinion.

You sure it's not the carrier bearing? Needswings changed his and don't remember how much but thought it was around 200 bucks. I don't think our ujoints would fail before the carrier bearing.

Awesome, I guess I need to lay on some icy concrete and take a look at mine.If it looks bad I will be ordering that. I suppose a loose bearing could definitely cause my problems.

Obviously, I grew up on American V8's, so this type of 'shaft' is different to me. They are telling me it is a special shaft, not a driveshaft, and that it doesn't have u-joints.

Dealer says $1600 for new shaft and $180 to install...

Not that I know of. That is what I have done in the past, but right now I don't have a real good work area, and the weather sucks, so I gave the dealer a shot.

Yea, I don't use mechanics very often, as I can do all those things myself, time permitting. This quote will be hard to beat.

Interesting, damn I need to just all my American car knowledge and trash it.lol

Needswings is most likely my next step. For some reason those threads didn't show up on my search. Thanks for all the responses!

If it is the ujoint the driveline part number is 5135420AA and it is lots cheaper, I have sent you a PM on the price. By the way the Mercedes part number is A 170 410 28 06 , just FYI.
If it is a rear axle the part number is 5159990AA and the MB # is A170 410 28 06.

You could take it to a driveline shop and they could probably repair it cheaper like Stogey said. Make sure you tell them it is a SRT, there are three drivelines one for the auto trans N/A - one for the manual N/A and one for the SRT.

The driveshaft is similar to my old 88 300zx and the entire assembly has to be replaced. I took mine out and went to a driveline shop and they made me a new aluminum one WITH changeable U-joints for $200.

Ok, kinda overwhelmed here. It could be the carrier bearing, shaft, end blocks, axles, pinion bearing...etc.

Anybody have an opinion on this based on my problem? Thinking about replacing the carrier bearing first and seeing how that goes....Also thinking about just going to a shop to get a custom one, but it is my daily driver....

Except mine isn't a thump, it is a pulsating vibration starting at 55mph...No problems below 55mph at all

Well, after some personal inspection of the drive shaft I became convinced there were no problems there, so i went back to the tires. BINGO! Four new tires and problem solved....*#&$& Dodge tech....

Appel Dodge Chrysler Jeep in Brenham, TX. Don't want to just bash them or anything, but I have never had much luck with their guys. This isn't the first time I have fixed a problem by not doing what they said....

Tires solved my pulsating issues. My issue didn't start until around 75 to 80 MPH. it was almost like a rolling pulsation. Like surround sound, going from the front to the back of the car.
My tires where worn at the edges but still had some good tread in the center. I had a tough inspection station that wouldn't pass them and I went and replaced them. Pulsating problem was gone!
