Has anyone tried a smaller than stock diameter tire/wheel combo? Like maybe a whole inch or two smaller diameter?

I was discussing this with +fireamx and we figured a smaller diameter tire would be the equivalent of a lower geared differential, and possibly give better launches. But we were concerned that the ECU would detect an odd differential between the front and rear tire spins and do something bad.

Anyone have any input on that?

Discount Tire just quoted me $677.34 shipped and installed on these wheels and 275/40/17 Nitto Drags. He was pretty sure I need the 32 offset and said my factory lugs should be fine. Any thoughts....I was pressing him to do the Voxx's at a 20 offset, but he said these would be better. 17x8 5-112
32 Offset

Check my post on the previous page, I'll be sure to share the results. I'm gonna run 225/50/16 which are about 1" smaller than stock.

Lower offset is better IMO. with a 32mm your wheel is gonna be pushed further into the wheel well. I'm going 16x8 with 15mm.

Obviously the guy doesn't know our cars well enough. I also had to convince the guy at my shop too. The Voxx's fit perfectly with the 20 offset and shorter bolts. I had them mount the wheels when they arrived to be sure it fit just right with the correct bolts.

I am with you! I like the look of the Discount tire set up, it is a little cheaper than Needswings......but I am thinking Robs set up may be a little better. My only concern with Rob's is driving on those tires for an hour each way to get to and from the track. Any thoughts on this anyone?

It depends if these are just for the track. If so then just consider the hoosiers or mickey thompsons. These should be called drag slicks because they give you the same performance as slicks. The nittos are drag radials and improve traction in comparison to street radials. Do you want the best possible et or save a few bucks?

Oh...I want the best, but are these (MT's or Hoosiers) safe to drive one hour each way to the track. I would take them off when I get home for every day driving but how bad would crusing at 70mph be on the tire?

I have mine at 35 psi when I race at the other track in town. It's on the other side and takes me about an hour to get there. I usually cruise about 70mph with no problems. I only race there about 6 times a year, so not driving there every weekend. My only concerns for you will be wear? Weather?
Wear? I treat my DR's with respect and absolutely never spin them on regular roads. These only come with 5/32" new. So I get quality runs only. When going for time records, I check weather conditions and figure DA and if it's not favorable I don't waste my time. My track is about 15 min at the most away, but regular driving shouldn't wear your tires too much. Just resist lighting them up on the way to the track.
Weather? I would hesitate to drive these in rain but I do remember SRTPowa saying he drove his hoosiers in the rain with no problems. Would be up to you, I've only driven in rain once with my car period.

I drove my MT DR's to and from PIR last October when it was cold and started drizzeling on the way home. The car started to slip around on the uphill curves untill I slowed it way down. Dry roads I would be okay with, but not any wetness.

Yes, I got caught in a bad rain storm one night. The hoosiers were fine, granted I drove 35-45mph the whole way home. You just have to use common sense in that situation and be careful with the throttle. Also they say they are not approved for road use but I drove around on them fine as well as countless other local racers making a lot more HP than my measly crossfire.

Well I broke down and bought the same set up as Mimi05SRT6. Discount Tire had the set up in stock at a local warehouse in Dallas and was able to get them in just a few hours. I am going after work to have them installed and will be at the track on Saturday with 240M3SRT to see if I can knock some time off my previous best of 12.2. I will be removing the 100lbs of stereo from the hatch tonight that was in the car the last time when I ran the 12.2 so it should be interesting.

I have owned a set of these Nitto Drags in the 16" size 10years ago and was able to pull 1.5 and 1.6 60' in my 1997 Z-28 with a 125 shot of N20. I could spray off the line and lift the passenger front tires! These tires can stick~

What is your best 60' so far?

I found some 18lb 16" wheels for $110 shipped if I recall correctly from discount tire direct. I am debating on ordering them, I swore I was only going to run street tires/wheels on this car lol.

My best overall time and 60ft is below. 1.964 is the best I could get on my stock PS2's. This was the first pass of that day and traction got worse and worse with each run. By my last run, I has a 12.4 with a 2.2 60'!

Now what I love most about that slip is that smoking .007, heck not many catching on that one. Your 1/8' mile time and mph are well within the low 12's, those will drop a little with a better 60' but not by much. I was at 91mph on my 11.89 pass. Be sure to get your DA at the track. That way you can put the Maryland factor into it.

Glad you noticed... I can always cut a pretty good light, but after a few hundred times down the track, this was my 2nd best ever. 10 years ago in my Z-28 in Odessa, TX. I cut a .004!

Got my rims and drags on this evening. Everything bolted up just fine and now I have to wait until Saturday and see what it will do! Thank you to everyone that posted info. The 17 x 8 Voxx's 20 offset with shorter bolts was perfect!

I will check the DA, but we usually have it pretty good in Texas. Weather calls for a low of 54 and a high of 72 and it supposed to be windy. Last time out we were running into the wind, with a little luck we may have it "pushing" us down the track!

I think I am going to go with this:

16"x7" Voxx MG wheels 18lbs each:

http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...r=1&wd=16&rw=7

and 255/50/16 MT et streets drag radials.

It appears the 16" Voxx wheels will clear, does anyone have any thoughts on that?

I wish they were a little wider but I doubt 1" will make any difference and Mickey Thompson says 7" to 9" rims work with that size tire.
