Default tranny not working

Well heres the problem. I will be driving along and then when the car shifts it throws it sell into neutral. It only has happened a couple of time but that to many. The shifter **** dose not move but neither dose the car. I have to stop and let the tyranny stop moving and then it goes back into gear. Also when I start to pull from a start you can hear a very faint grinding noise. Any ideas.

First and foremoest get up under the car and visually check the driveline and shift linkage for interference/abnormalities.

Need to bring it in to be checked. Don't want to wait. Could be an expensive issue.

Could be electrical, or mechanical, or fluid level.

Get it checked!

Let us know what they find, please

my car is going in to get fixed on monday. I am getting the headliner replaced along with both window trims, and the center conceal. I am going to ask them to fix the high beams, the rear rims, tranny, door sills, peeling pant, some rattle that i cant find, and a high pitch whistle when i turn my car to the left. I feel like its not going to go well.

You probably leaked tranny fluid at the Oring connector. If the leak is slow enough then it will never drip to the pavement. if its super-slow, then it will never even go to the tranny pan. It will instead go up the wires, and only up the wires, never to be seen below the car. Evil eh?

Once it gets up the wires it reaches the tranny computer that sits under the passenger's feet. If it gets it too wet, your computer starts to die.

Its good that you're taking the car in. Those leaks are very deceptive.

Considering pulling back passenger's carpet, pulling back the extra layer of padding, and pulling back the styrofoam under there. You'll then see a metal plate. Mounted on this metal plate, but behind it so you can't see it yet, is the tranny computer, and I believe the stero amplifier, as well as the ABS unit. There are 3 nuts to remove to allow the removal of the metal plate, but even without doing that the metal plate has some holes you can stick your finger in. Stick the finger in and feel around: feel anything wet? I hope not.

EDIT: But this problem sounds much more physical than electronics related. The leak could certainly cause a loss of fluid which can cause a physical problem, but these trannies usually die slow with a fluid loss, not suddenly. But hey, its worth checking out.

I changed my oil about a month ago and noticed a red fluid coming from a bolt near the passenger side cat near the headers. I brought it in and they said that they fixed it well it started doing it again so thats why i brought it in again. I have no idea but is tranny fluid red?

I can help but notice your age has there been any abuse done to the vehical? example would be 15 min burnouts, revving your car in nuetral and poping it in drive. I dont mean to insult you but 16-18 years olds will do some crazy things with cars. All of these sort of things can definatly cause serious damage to your drivetrain.

I know what your think but no I haven't done anything like that. The worst abuse I have put the car through is drag racing at moroso but thats it. Im real careful with the car because I plan on keeping it as a collector piece. I also have two other collectors I love cars and don't abuse them. Its funny because I have been dumped twice because the girl couldn't stand that I would pay more attention to my cars then them.

Yes the tranny fluid is red and yes it can leak several times even with the new connectors.

The import thing to understand is one leak can drench the computer above it, and dealers don't check the computer after they repair a leak. The fluid sits on top of and in the computer. Any second leak could help force the problem along also.

just be careful! put in the extra time it takes to check these things out you'll be thankful later

There have been a few ppl that had the computer replaced due to fluid killing it, but you have to specifically tell the dealer to look or they won't care, or know. And it might not die until after warranty if no one looks at it before then.

Not sure whats happing about the rim. I brought my car in yesterday to get a bunch of things done to it. The dealer is Delray Mitsubishi (also Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Subaru, Suzuk, and Chysler) He didn't know when i was going to get the car back becasue of the list i gave him. But i will keep you informed about the rim when i get my car back.
