Default Safe to drive in the rain with a NW CAI?

I'm not talking about trudging through tall puddles but I imagine a good deal of moisture will get past the front grill and to the filter element of the CAI. Is it safe?

i had them make me a hydro-shield for mine back when i bought it for extra protection against hydrolock. I got the first one ever made

it works really well but to be honest i forgot to put it back on last october when i was at maryland and have been running it fine without it ever since.

One of our CTC members stuffed his behind the right side fog lamp assy. Not exactly in the air stream but it is "cold air" ! I plan on doin the same with mine when I get it mounted up.

No problems with ours even though it rains often here in Florida. You can always add the waterproof cover to your filter, Needswings sells them. Our grill is modified which exposes the filter even more but still no problems.

You have to put a sock over your intake when it rains?? Does the water damage the filter?

What happens if you head out and you forget to take your sock with you, and it starts raining?

Do you have to take the grill off to put the sock on?

it goes over the filter and stays on the filter all the time. there is very little if any restriction. it just replels water, not air. there would be no reason to take it off unless you want to make sure you got that extra 1/10'th whp at the track.

I installed both of them on an angle to prevent any issue and drove 1000 miles to the dragon in the rain. Enjoy, Woody

You are unlikely to get Hydro lock with a CAI. what you may get is interference wth the MAS. Any water that gets past the filter element will be mist and will effect the MAS as the fluid acts different than the air.

My unit from Eurocharged is in the fender well where the IC pump is located on SRT's. It had issues in heavy rain as the vertical piping would develope a water bubble. I put a plastic garden drain grill under the filter element and have had no issues since.

My deluge thru Nashville where, at 60 MPH, I ran thru a puddle over my axles proved the system is safe from hydro lock. The water tore the access door off but the engine ran fine. I imagine to get hydro lock you would need at least a 50% volume/ratio of water to air. In other words a solid wave of water. The NW are high enough, this is unlikely. But the socks work well and would prevent it.

If you do get a MAS interference issue, it would be during high acceleration. The the worst you might see is an engine light and rough running. Shut down, disconect the battery for a few seconds and it will right itself.

My experience anyway.

I have a dual CAI using Needswing design and have put 30k miles in daily driving with out an issue. I don't think you will have an issue.

There was an old, nasty K&N panel filter on display where I work.. I tried cleaning it with water one day just to make it presentable, and I literally filled it up with water and nothing leaked through. I haven't worried about the intake since.
