Default New SRT6 Owner-Warranty Question!

Hi - this is my first post. Great site!

I just bought a 2005 SRT-6 Roadster with 24K miles from the original owner (well, it was traded in and I bought from dealer). I took delivery of it yesterday and love the car so far. However, I have a warranty issue.

In reading the owner and warranty manuals, it clearly states that a 7/70 limited powertrain warranty can be transferred to the second owner of the vehicle for $150, but when I went to the local dealer to do the powertrain warranty transfer, they said the Chrysler system shows only an expired 3/36 warranty on the car and there was nothing to transfer. I called the 800 number at Chrysler and the rep told me the same thing.

Both the dealer and the Chryler Rep confirmed that I am listed as the second "in use" owner and the warranty manual seems to state fairly clearly that while there is a limited 3/36 warranty, there is also a 7/70 limited powertrain warranty on the car and that it is transferable to the second owner. Here is the language copied directly from the warranty manual:

2.2 Powertrain Limited Warranty
A. Who is Covered?
You are covered by the Powertrain Limited
Warranty if you are the first purchaser for use of
the vehicle. You are also covered if you are the
second purchaser for use of the vehicle, and have
paid the $150 transfer fee within 30 days of
purchase. See Section 2.2.F for more information
about transfer of coverage.
And if you look at Section 2.2.F it seems pretty straight-forward:

F. Transfer of Powertrain Warranty
To transfer the Powertrain Warranty, you must have an
authorized Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep dealer process a
"Transfer of Coverage Application" for you. The cost
for this service is $150. You pay this fee directly to the
dealer. You must apply for a coverage transfer within 30
days from the date you buy the vehicle.
I don't understand why I am not eligible for this coverage. Has anyone had a similar experience and were you able to resolve it? Does anyone have any advice on what next steps (if any) that I can take to try to get this coverage?

I'm really in a time crunch here too, because even though I only got the car delivered yesterday, the purchase date was 6-9 and based on the 30 day transfer clause I only have until next Friday (July 9) to get the transfer in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jon

Chrysler has been known to change warranty rules during mid year, etc...

It has more to do with when the car was originally first sold and what warranty policy was in effect, verses what the book says.

I can tell you when I bought my Durango, being the second owner at 38K, I could not transfer the warranty as well. The first owner choose 3/36 bumper to bumper over a 12/12 w/ 7/70 powertrain coverage.

I believe you are the third owner as the dealer would be the second once the car was traded in. The dealer would have had to pay to Certify the car to make the warranty transferable. That is where the certified term comes from. The dealer pays as much as $600 to certify the car and has to do some maintenance items and check out the car.

Not Exactly Sure If My Problem Was The Same As Yours, But I Had An Issue With A Warranty Transfer From A Private Seller. Seems The Original Buyer Was Not Sold A Chrysler Warranty, But One Sold By The Dealership By Fidelity Insurance. (fidelity Has Terrible Reviews)!! The Selling Chrysler Dealers Make More Commission On The 3rd Party Warranties. They Made The Transfer So Difficult, That By The Time I Got The Needed Papers And Affadavits Completed 30 Days Had Elapsed And I Was Out Of Luck. I Had To Purchase A New Warranty Thru Chrysler Corp And Paid Mucho $$$ For Full Coverage For My Srt For About 2 And 1/2 Yrs, Till 7 Yrs Elapses From The "in Service Date". But It Is Thru "chrysler"! Make Sure The Warranty You Are Looking At Is A Chrysler Corp Warranty, And Not A 3rd Party One. Good Luck .....

The dealer is correct on this. The car did NOT have the 7/70. I just bought a SRT in April and checked before I purchased. My 04 had and still has time on the 7/70, but the 05 did not carry 7/70; it has 3/36 powertrain---sorry!!! The dealer is NOT a owner---Owners are counted by issued titles.

If I am correct all the 05 SRT6 models only came with the 3/36 coverage when they first came out, they did not offer the factory 7/70 drivetrain since it was considered a race car, but afterwards down the road they offered it back with the Chrysler extended waranty plan that you could purchase.

My understanding is the SRT6 only came with 3/36.

That is correct. They changed the warranty for 2005's. When we bought ours, it did not have the 7/70 by "default". If the first owner purchased the extended warranty for 7/70 coverage, then yes, it would be transferable. The "dealer" doesn't count as a registered owner. You would be the 2nd owner.

Thanks for all the replies.

I am definitely the second "in use" owner and that fact has been confirmed by both the dealer and the Chrysler rep that I spoke with. That's why I'm so annoyed with Chrysler right now. If the warranty is 3/36 and there is no 7/70, why is it printed in both the SRT6 specific owners manual and the SRT6 specific warranty manual for the 2005 model year?

If the requirement was that the original owner purchased the additional coverage, the wording in the warranty manual should state that fact, but if you read my original post, it simply states that "You are covered by the Powertrain Limited Warranty if you are the first purchaser for use of the vehicle".

And even worse, if they truly were going to offer it (so far as printing it in the manuals) and then changed it, there should be a clear addendum available for the warranty manual that states the coverage was changed and no 7/70 is available. I can find no records or documentation of this sort for the 2005 SRT6. Everything I find specifically states transferable 7/70 powertrain warranty. I even found old ad campaigns and auto magazine articles talking about Chrysler's 7/70 transferable powertrain warranty.

I have been buying new and pre-owned Chrysler vehicles for 20 years and have never had any issues with warranties. What was printed in the manual is what I got - ALWAYS. I guess since American car companies are basically backed by the Government, that they can now act like the Government and change the rules as they go.

Oh, and just to be clear - I still love my SRT6.

Looking into buying some of the cool aftermarket stuff I've seen on this site - the lighted door sills and wind screen look sweet!

Did you get the 2005 SRT Vehicles warranty information book with the car ? because I have all my original books and such and in mine, it does not state anything about the 7/70 drive train warranty just the 3/36 option, and the the corrosion and federal emmisions, right on page # 1 and no listing at all on that page about the 7/70, or through the rest of it.
