Default SRT Coupe vs. Convertible

Hey Guys-

How much heavier is the convert? Is insurance all that much more? I'm really having a hard time between the two. I like SSB for a color and I think that I am leaning towards a convertable, but wanted to see what you all thought first. Any pros and cons? This will be a "fun/my baby" car only, not a daily driver. I'll be in the Chicago area. Still have yet to see an SRT6 on the road up here, so I'm pretty excited to be the odd ball.

Call me if you want too 785-477-3007. Bryan. Thanks!

For a fun only car you gotta go Roadster.

Its all personal preference. I wouldn't rule out either one because insurance or other cost might be higher. Its all about having the most enjoyment from what ever you decide.

I don't want to cause any hard feelings here, but the SSB is my favorite color on a Roadster, the two colors look classy together.

James

PS Anyway you go, there is this forum to help you thru any trouble you may find.

I can see the forum is well used and I LOVE that. I agree with SSB and black top. Cars.com has a nice one out of Missouri for nearly $20k. The price seems a little high to me. Can't wait to get more serious and put down some offers.

Check my pix in my signature.

I got the SSB with Cedar interior, and the color match looks very cool.

Regarding price on purchase, mine was mint with 12k on it, manual, and you could eat off the engine (looked like factory clean to me).

(Mine is not an SRT, and there is a premium to pay for this model, and probably a limited number of Roadsters, compared to the hard top).

I paid $18.5 from the Dealer with an existing Lifetime Powertrain warranty.

I never utilized the warranty to date, but it's stated cleary on my invoice (for what it's worth).

No matter what anyone says, price does count, but in the end you only pass this way once, so make the best of it.

Besides, where else can you get a Mercedes Roadster for the current resale pricing being posted in todays market...

All things being equal, I would buy the ragtop. But be careful where you park in Chicago. I bought my SRT6 from a dealer there and had to repair a door dent and replace the handle from someone who had tried to break in to the car. Factored that into the price, but it was still sad to see.

We have one of each. Both SSB and SRT. The insurance on the roadster is a bit higher but not enough to turn you away. Each car has its advantages. The coupe has hatch space for two sets of golf clubs and luggage for two. The roadster trunk, luggage for a long weekend. In the spring and fall nothing like a top down drive for relaxation. For me the roadster is for laid back enjoyment. The coupe feeds the speed junkie. Lots of fun and my favorite to drive. In my opinion both are beauties in SSB. You really can't go wrong with either choice.

Doc is right too!

Insurance is a little higher on the roadster.
If I had to get rid of one it would be the coupe. Course we have plenty of top down days here, not so where you are. Roadster has more road noise if that's important to you. Have to consider the replacement cost of the top down the road.

This was pulled from the SRT6 Specifications document that is in the document collection thread:

Coupe 3240 (1469 kg)
Roadster 3328 (1509 kg)

So according to that, it's only an 88 pound difference. With the power the SRT6 has, you're not going to notice much difference in quickness so I wouldn't put to much weight on the weight into my decision.

Drive one of each - you can take some Limited's for a ride (easier to find) to get an idea of the basic difference/feel between the coupe and 'vert. The first crossfire I found and drove was a Limited coupe, and I quickly realized that I was too claustrophobic for the coupe. I still found and drove an Aero Blue SRT6 Coupe before I bought my vert - just to make sure ...LOL!

My first color choice was SSB, but after seeing a graphite metallic SRT6 convertible, that's what I wanted and eventually found.

Good luck!

Jon

i have the definitive answer!! buy a slk32 and get both at once!!! honestly for the chicago area and assuming its not a daily driver vert is the better choice. sorry but a short drive to morocco raceway will show you a bunch of srt-6 cars on the track most weekends

True, you would get both.....Coupe 3100lbs, Roadster 3400lbs.....don't believe what you read.....done on my certified scales at work....I need to re-weigh the roadster today, as I have made a few changes, but it will be close...

When it comes to True performance cars I have always chosen the Coupe over the Roadster in every performance road course car.
I bought my SRT with the intension of keeping it for the rest of my life. If the same is done with a roadster I feel one had better set aside enough money to buy an original top and plan on having an "Expert Convertable Top Installer" install it at some point along the way towards forever.
Every car lover has had that deadful thought or worry of some ba!!less Jerk "Keying" his or her car. Convertables have just that much more for us worry warts to think about.
I would still like to buy a drop top SRT as a second, if the situation ever arises
Mike

The roadster is always garaged...and taking care of the top is a must...looking to work on that yet today...reading thru the threads now to decide what to use....but, as performance stands, for some reason, I am enjoying the coupe a lot more...just feels a little more solid...good luck with the purchase...nothing wrong with a roadster...by both, and you are in car heaven...

Unless you plan to race, the roadster will give you more fun and pleasure. Plus a better return on your investment down the road.

Even now SRT roadsters are fetching $3K to $6K more than the coupes. When they become old collectables, everyone pays more for the verts.

If it was going to be primarily a track car I would say get the coupe. Since this is going to be a fun car get the roadster. With the heat and heated seats you can comfortably cruise around in 40.0 degree weather (with the windows up).

I love my roadster. Even if you do race, how often will you do that? I get a lot of heads turning with my roadster.

The roadster naturally is not as quiet as the coupe. My insurance company charges the same for both.

BTW, with a roadster you can add one of those windrestictors and that is something that is pretty unique. An SRT roadster with a windrestrictor can't be beat.

Lots of activity on this one--thanks for all the great feedback!

My wife has a pano-roof SRX and the thing is just plain loose. I want a fast car too and hope to be under 13 seconds within the first 6 months of having the car. All the vids I see are coupes. I just can't help to wonder why there are very few roadster vids on YouTube so that's why I had wondered about the weight.

We'll see what comes up in the next few months. I really like the idea about driving the limiteds to see what feels better initially, of course considering that it's not an SRT. SSB or Aero Blue it will be. Current car is graphite and wifes SRX is black. Anyone want to cruise out to my house in Joliet with an SRT so we can talk? Can't wait!
