Default A Cracked Cat Exhaust...

I took it into the dealer and they said the area that is split around the cat is cracked and are gonna repair it for $400. What is the cost that a fix like this goes for?

Also what is my other option to replacing it? I have emissions and Chrysler is saying a new one is 1600!!!

which catalytic converter is it? If it is one of the rear two I would just have them removed. Going to be way cheaper and sound so much better!

Primary or Secondary cat? SRT or NA?

If it is the secondary cat I would just take it to an exhaust shop and have them chop off the secondary cats. You don't need them and they are after the O2 sensors which are needed for emissions testing...

If it is primary cats, I would look around, you can find 50 state legal cats for cheaper that $400 and definitely cheaper than $1600.

My $0.02

It's a SRT. I just talked to the Crossfire Tech and he showed me that the casing on the passenger Secondary side cat is completely split open all the way around.

He said he won't know if the guts inside is done since it has been raining here and I been driving it in the rain. Sun is when it completely split open. The car sounds like a damn motor boat. He said he hasn't heard of a SRT doing this.

My question to u guys is to completely cut them off and how will it sound if I have my resonator deleted?

Or let them weld it back together.

Assuming the cat is repairable, your cheapest option is to weld it. Try to find someone that uses stainless welding wire(mig). Not a must but will certainly give a nicer end result

What if they weld it up and the cat inside is not repairable will it mess the car up?

Good question. It is best to remove the cat and inspect the inside. Running with uneven back pressure cant be good. If the catalist is broken up or gone, you always have option #2, cat delete.

If the cat is split, it has problems. Do not waste your money on a patch job. Go to a GOOD muffler shop and have both primary cats replaced with the correct aftermarket replacements.

That is the only way to "repair" it.

Very true. He did say that he would drill a hole in each cat to do some sort of test to make sure both were working properly after he welded it.

U think the cat itself is done if the casing is split?

I'm gonna see if the cat itself has been plugged and is repairable by welding it back. I'll have him take a back pressure gauge and see.

Do u guys know any sites that will have aftermarket high flow secondary cats for our SRT's?

Is the primary and secondary cats the same size?

Any help is appreciated.

Don't waste your time. Unless you ran over something, then that cat has serious issues. Corrosion, fatigue, plugged substrate, back pressure splitting case, none are good, and none warrant fixing. Just by chance, check to see if emissions warranty is still valid. It might be, then dealer has to replace. If not, take that $400 (insane price), and get a good quality replacement on both sides.

+1 on what MrMopar Says! Check the warranty on the cats!

IMO, just remove the secondary cats...both of them. I took mine off and left the resonator. It has a more full sound, but doesn't have any drone or isn't annoying in any way. I really like the sound of it.

...though I will admit, once you get used to it you may want to make more changes to the exhuast...at least I did/do...

Thanks guys for the replies. Unfortunately I'm pass the 8/80 which sucks but the tech is gonna weld it up and then use a back pressure guage to test it and see. If its bad their not charging me.

Graciously, I had a forum member contact me offering all 4 of his cats for just a shipping charge. I love this board!

GLT, thanks for the post above, i just found out that i have a cracked left converter, gonna run it down to the dealer and see if i'm still in the window for replacement (don't think so). Regardless, what was the follow on to your test with the weld/replacement. Just wanted to know. Thanks.

Don't waste you time. Either take them off if you are so inclined or have a muffle shop weld in new ones. I did 4 new cats welded in for about 800.00. Once the rear one starts dumping our the fronts in my case were not too far behind.
