Default Engine mount replacement

One of the things I need to fix, on my new to me six, are the engine mounts. I have done some research, and it appears there are two schools of thought, 1) remove the exhaust downpipes, and remove them from the rear, or 2) remove the alternator, and A/C compressor, and remove them from the front.
Anyone have first hand experience of replacing these mounts, and care to share their experience ?
Anyone have any pro's or cons, to either method, or which one is the best ?
Thanks in advance for any advice !

You can replace them from the rear without removing the exhaust. I think i only had to remove the steering stabilizer and the belly pan. maybe a heat shield bolt or two, its been a while.
