Clear Coat on Headlights?? Removal...HELP!
OK, so the headlights on my XFire are fogging on the outside... no new news there, problem is under closer inspection and after buffing on them seems the previous owner had someone remove the fog and they then sprayed a clear coat over them... sooooooo question is... How do I get that clear coat off, without damaging the lense so I can just maintain them and keep them clear.???????
Does the headlight film (3M) keep them from fogging again?
Mike if you were closer I'd just bring my car to you and have you give her the once over to get her back up to par, she needs some attention!!!

Deb, is this clear coat on the fog lights an actual spray on clear coat (ie, clear paint) or is it more like the 3M clear film? If it's clear coat paint you may be stuck with it, except that if it lacks clarity you can probably buff it out a bit with something like Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. Only issue there is you've got a small area in a fairly tight spot to work with, and you can't easily get a buffer in there so you're looking at some hand work. If it's a 3M clear film, why not just leave it in place? It will help protect the lens from fading, no doubt about it.
Unfortunately it is a spray-on clear coat... some of it is gone, peeled etc... buttfet it out smooth, but it is noticeable... no way to strip it off there... wetsanding maybe???

Check out this post. It worked for me. I then added a protective layer from www.rvinyl.com and have had no problems with the haze.
