Is RAIN-X the best product for windshield?
IMO Rain-X provides limited help. Nothing takes the place of using your windshield wipers. The more you use the wipers the faster the Rain-X has to be reapplied. To me it's not worth the money, time and effort to apply the stuff.
A side note... when I was working on Air Force aircraft, we applied a rain repellant on the windshield that worked well with the ram air rain removal system. Didn't have windshield wipers on the big jets.

Rain-X is excellent on all the exterior glass surfaces including the windshield, side windows, rear window and side view mirrors. It not only makes the glass real easy to clean but also keeps the glass clear and easy to view out when it is raining. I have use it for over 30 years. I apply it about twice a year on all my cars. The trick is to use a damp cotton cloth after applying, followed by a dry cotton t-shirt to dry and polish until clear and clean. It is wonderful when done right.
Personal opinion here: Crossfire begs for Rain-X on the back glass especially. But I do all the glass anyway. I also did the headlight lenses.
I use the "Box O Rags" product you can get at practically any home store (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.), both for applying and for buffing after. Dunno why some might think it takes so long... takes me all of 15 minutes to do two coats on every piece of exterior glass.
Don't skimp and not do the second coat, you'll know the first time it rains that you missed spots!

It's real late to be chiming in on this since the last post was in march, but I'm still gonna. I have used Rain-X for around 18 years and couldn't be happier. I completely agree with David Burns about the polishing and second coat, when done right Rain-X removes the need for windshield wipers at 40+. If you use it on your windows more often in the winter, it makes the frost and ice come off your winter car that much easier. For what it's worth.
RAIN-x WAS ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED TO MAKE WINDSHIELDS OF AIRCRAFT MORE RESISTANT TO BUGS REDUCING VISION ON LOW FLYING CROP-DUSTER AND THE LIKE...
JIMBOO.
JIMBOO.
For anyone who thinks Rain X takes too long to apply, just by the Rain-X Wiper fluid. I came across Rain-X bug removal wiper fluid and just figured it would help with bug guts and not do much for rain. But it does apply rain-x, I realized while driving in the rain and suddenly realizing I wasn't watching the road and just staring at the race of rain drops up my windshield.
I have also used the polishing style, and it work any better, so its wiper fluid for me for now on.

Yeah I like the rain x products also I used it all the time until I found there in chemicals in the rain x weakens your windshield but I never followed through with this accusation about the product. I also didn't notice anyone mention about it on this forum but if its no harm to the windshield I will start using it all over again.
i have been using "aquapel" glass treatment. this product puts "rain x" to shame. the longevity of rain x is very poor by comparison. aquapel easily lasts a true 2 months. $9.95
