First and foremost let me make it explicitly clear that I know very little about cars (otherwise I wouldn't be asking for help). I know just enough to take good care to maintain my vehicle. That being said I have a question regarding turbochargers/superchargers. I own and 04' coupe ltd. I am looking to enhance the performance a bit and increase the retail value a little. I found a couple of turbo chargers that I think would work for my engine. I was considering purchasing it, but wanted to do some research first. My first question is, is this part in fact even compatible with my engine and could it even be installed? Second, as I mentioned previously I know very little about cars so in the event that I did acquire this part would there be any additional accompanying parts to have it installed? I am aware of how a turbocharger works and can only assume that I could not simply slap a turbo charger onto the engine and be able to drive around, and that perhaps I would need to acquire something additional to maintain proper function of the car. Next increasing the output would surely put more stress on the engine and its vital parts so would adding the turbocharger degrade the life of my engine? If so (going along with the previous question) is there something I could do or a part I could acquire that would prevent any degradation in the life of my engine? Lastly would the increase in performance really be of any benefit or would I just be wasting my time?
Any help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

there is much more to this project than you anticipate, you must build custom headers/downpipes, custom exhaust, possibly an intercooler setup and an intake. if you are not very mechanically inclined do not even attempt this. call a shop and see if they can build you a custom setup because there isn't a bolt on setup for these cars. the price you were lookin at was just for a turbo.

 

Not trying to be rude, but if you have to ask any of those questions then I would suggest you not even think about doing this.

 

Many have come through here speaking of turbos, etc. One current member is attempting this on his Crossfire (drift car). He seems to have come the closest of anyone. Do a search on the forum for 'drift' or 'slide project.' It will tell you the route he is attempting.

Foremost I had no intention of doing the work myself, so if it's done properly I see no difference in whether or not I posses the knowledge of doing the work. I just wanted to know where to begin. I do appreciate the concern though.

Put everything down and go purchase "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell.

Read it cover to cover several times.

It will help you become much much more educated on the subject, and allow you to make good decisions should you pursue this further.

Remember, even if you find a shop that says they can make a turbo kit for the car, and I'm sure there are plenty that could if they tried, that doesn't mean it would be safe or worthwhile. They key to a successful turbo conversion is lots and lots of knowledge.

Fine to give a custom turbo or supercharger setup a try if you want, but don't expect it to be a good financial decision. *If* you increase the value of your car, it certainly won't be by as much as the money you'll have to pour into designing/building the system.

 

All very good info for him... But, I think the easiest are the mechanical parts... Now this big problem... The electronics to let your engine run with the upgraded / altered parts...

That's the BIG problem... For the original poster, keep in mind that this car operates on a tangled mesh of computer modules that all have to enjoy each others company... If computer module "A" is having a bad day, the entire car runs the risk of not running properly, or at all...

After doing MEGA research on this process I would not risk it without the professional help of someone who knows exactly how to reprogram the entire computer system... And has proven experience installing a turbo / SC on this engine...

 

you're right.... has anyone on this forum gone with the kleenman S/C kit... those guys know how to program the car and they have the parts for making boost, too bad they can't drop the price by a couple grand.

 

You're right, but they will never drop the price because they specialize in tuning MBs for a market that expects to pay those prices (makes everything even more "exclusive," you know). They can get away with price gouging, so that's exactly what they do.
