home made intake
I have seen a lot of crossfires with dual intakes on the engine. I have heard you can buy the parts at a hardware store and the filters to go with them at the auto parts store to save a lot of money. Does anyone know what size pipes to get and what parts I will need. I dont wanna pay 300 bucks for a piece of pipe because a car manufacturer makes it.

there was one or two guys that have tried but each of those located the filter under the hood in a hot area ... its a very tight engine bay, thats why so many of us bought the needswings intake ... yes it is just a tube but in order to duplicate the fit and finish of the tube it would require so many hours of R&D on the creators part that you may as well go work for it at your regular job and make 3x the money needed to get a equally well fitting system.
search in the gallery ... one of the guys that made his own has pictures. he use a 90 degree silicone elbow and a steel tube with a smaller bend in it ... around 45 degree maybe. it located a large cone filter behind the driver side headlight.
reconsider the needswings intake as it removes the restrictive 90 degree plastic elbow along with loads of bellows from inside of it giving you a nice machined flange to mount the MAF to.
as you said ... its just tubes ... but then again, the space shuttle is just metal and plastic arranged in a nice fashion. its time ... thats whats in the price.

I'll elaborate a little further on what intenseblu already started.
All I need to say is one thing.........make sure you're absolutely positive that whatever you "make" is sealed tight, you REALLY wouldn't want anything getting sucked up a poorly fitted pipe and finding it's way into your engine!
I run a needswings.....I've met the man. It's not a giant corporation, just a guy with a lot of friends in high places, that happens to make very high quality parts. The CAI took a few months to develop, (maybe more!), not a few hours and a six-pack of beer. I know......I was the testbed for the NA intake. I doubt you'd find anyone who has anything bad to say about Needswings, or his parts.
Look on the internet and see what he's done for the SRT-4 tuners.........I feel he's more than qualified to work on my Crossfire! Matter of fact.....he's the ONLY one I let work on my car.
BTW........we were both at the track tonight.......His SRT-6 is one BAD A** ****!

I just installed it yesterday, and it really made my XF fly - loved the sound, too.
It took me about 2 hrs, but I have little auto-mech experience and minimal tools.

Not sure if the thread originator has a SRT or N/A Crossfire.
I know others have removed the brackets at the radiator support and enlarged the intake tubes - that and a couple of K&N filters and you should be on your way for less then $100
It's just been so long since I owned my Limited that I don't remember if it had these support brackets.
Personally - I would not want my air filter hanging out there constantly getting pepperd by bugs, road spew and rain.....when I wash my car and clean off all the bugs from the front bumper, grill and radiator I can just imagine....

FYI: The two red horns in my pic are my airhorn. I recently moved it down and out the way. I had to put it on because of all the high pick-ups and SUVs here that don't see me 'til tha last minute, oh and people on there cellphones.
It's loud! Reminds me of the old Jaguars and Aston Martins.
