Default New 2008 with weird noises from under the hood

Hello All!!! I am glad I found you!!!

I hope there are a few of you out there with some suggestions for me because the dealer is of little use.

Problem #1 When the engine is warm it makes a ticking or clicking noise under moderate/slow acceleration between 1500 to 2300ish rpms. It does not happen if you rev the engine in park nor in the final overdrive gear. It almost sounds like an old diesel engine. The dealer said to drive it for 1000 miles to see if it goes away (I bought the car with 18 miles on it). I have driven these before so when I test drove this one I didn't take that much time and just basically drove it around a couple of blocks, so I don't know if the car came with the tick. I'm assuming so. I discovered it while I sat in traffic with the top down at mile 88. I remember an old 68 Chevy El Camino I had many years ago that clicked like this when it was COLD because of a "lifter"

Problem #2 Also under acceleration the engine makes what I can best describe as a Whooooshhh sound. Not a cool whooosh like you used to hear when a turbo spooled up.The only thing I can liken it to is the sound an electric weed eater makes as you edge your lawn or clear some brush. The dealer heard the sound and said they all make that noise. NOPE! My friend used to have a 2006 Crossfire and I never heard this sound before. It is only really noticeable with the top down and the radio off. It's like there is a a plastic bag over the air intake and the engine is really struggling.

Problem #3 The engine does feel sluggish. The dealer said it just not broken in yet. It feel to me more like I'm driving with the emergency brake on!

Thanks in advance to any and all input!!

First off Welcome to the Forum and congrats on the new XFire !

The ticking sound is definitely, well somewhat, not normal. My car has 80K on her and only ticks for just a second when started up cold. As soon as the oil pressure comes up " no ticking ". I would not think a brand new car would do this especially if it does it all the time.

The "whoosh" sound will be a lil difficult to theorize on without hearing the car in person. But don't fret, if it's happened to someone here, I'm sure they'll chime in.

For the sluggish pedal, try doing a throttle reset. It's easy and only takes a couple of minutes.

Throttle Reset Procedure
Turn the ignition key to the ON position, do not start the engine
Press the gas pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there for 5 seconds
Turn the key to the OFF position but don't remove the key from the ignition and release the pedal
Give the ECU about 2 minutes to reset itself.......DONE

Well the bad news is you appear to be having troubles with your new XF.
The good news is you found the best damn XF site on the Web! I'm sure someone will be able to assist you with your problems.
I for one can explain "Problem #3 The engine does feel sluggish." I rode in a base XF this past weekend and we determined that the problem was that the car did not come with a supercharger!

Ok, that was too easy! Hopefully someone will chime in with a better answer for ya. Just wanted to welcome you and say "Hi".
"See" ya on the forum!

Bingo. You have to be agressive with the gas pedal to get some "feeling" out of it.

Thanks for the welcome! Coming from an 04 Viper SRT-10, (lovingly refeared around the house as THE BEAST), this stock little guy is a bit underpowered. BUT, as soon as I get this ticking resolved we'll see about giving him some more guts so I can really enjoy some of these California backroads.

ticking of any sort is bad news, mine makes no sounds, hot or cold at any rpm.

Or gone deef?
Mine ticks a little, especially when first started. Not bad mind you, but it's there. As for the ticking at speed. Could this be low octane or just old gas? Concerning the low power, whooshing sound. Vacuum leak? Dunno, I'm thinking in old car ways. it would seem all these things might be connected.

xfirefun,

What I would recommend that you do is get under the hood of the car, and listen to the engine, and figure out if you can locate the source of the noise.

Once you know the source, you can then figure out what might be wrong in there.

BC.

Ticking, sluggish.......maybe loose sparkplug wire? I can't image that on a new XF. A loose wire would spark, (ticking sound), to any close ground. Get under the hood and look around and listen carefully under there. But that's reaching! Good luck, and welcome!

The whooshing sound and the sluggish takeoff sounds like you might have an exhaust restriction. Just because it's new doesn't mean that there isn't something wrong.

Get a friend to help you check it out. One of the easiest ways is to have your friend idle up the motor, about 1500 RPM's, while you are at the back of the car. If you take your hand and move it toward the exhaust and it is EXTREMELY hot, like you can't get your hand within 18 inches of the tips hot, then your exhaust might be restricted. If this is the case then you can have your exhaust checked at the shop with a back pressure gauge. Hope this helps. This will also cause that whooshing sound, something on the order of a vacuum cleaner.

There is a slight ticking sound that comes from the fuel injectors. They all do that.

Sluggish performance.....I don't know. my limited was quick but not fast like the srt's are. Have the dealership run a code scan on the vehicle.

Both my Xfires have a slight tick to them, almost inaudible but can always be heard when idling.
The general consensus is injectors.

Does the reset procedure apply to both stick and automatic or just auto's?

Nice to know I am not alone. I even got my oil changed, convinced the people who di dthe last service before i bought my car didn't use synthetic. Told my hubby, "My c ar sound like a piece of sh*t." I usually have the stereo turned up so the mirrors vibrate & never notices. First thought, freakin lifters! Maybe I'll try fuel injector cleaner..
