Default Engine Clicking when cold

Hi guys - starting this winter and progressing now through the spring i have noticed a sort of clicking or ticking sound coming from my engine, especially when it is cold. The frequency of clicks increases and decreases proportionately with the RPMs, but also begins to click rapidly when i take my foot off the gas while running at high RPMs. After the engine has warmed up the ticking is much less aparent and eventually seems to disipate completely. I have an automatic transmission and suspect that it may have something to do with that, but I am not sure. Has anybody else experienced this - or does anybody else have any advice on what the possible cause?

Thanks in advance,

ORoadster

Where are you located? I am in the Hillsboro area. I would be happy to help you see if we can isolate where it is coming from.

A big thank you to MikeR for coming out to my office today to brave the blustery weather and help me figure out that the ticking is coming from the left side of the engine - after further research it appears it could be a problem with the hydraulic lifter in the second position. I am planning on taking the car in to have it looked at and will report back.

Thanks again, Mike.

And you are absolutely sure it is not this solenoid clicking, it sits on the left side of the eng on the fender well. I thought I had a lifter noise until I put my hand on this. As the eng warms up, the clicking gets quieter and then stops once warmed up.

James,
I took my stethescope over and listened and it is coming from the drivers side lifters. Loudest on the center cylinder location. Passenger side is very quiet.

My engine is making the same noise once started, but after the rpms/change to second gear it stops. It kinda sounded like a diesel engine only louder. It has only done this once. Did you ever isolate the problem? I would really like to know if it is nothing serious or if it is going to cost me. Hope to hear from you soon.

My crossfire was doing the same thing. Since I had the extended warranty I took it too the dealership. They replaced all of the lifters at 48k miles and by 50k it was making the same noise. I did notice that it is much better after an oil change, but comes back after a few days. I just accept it it for what it is and know it will be like this until it dies.

Mike, if the lifters aren't pumping up on these cars, maybe an oil pressure, oil pump problem starting. Just a thought, they are higher mileage cars....

The noise is in my engine too. Happens at idle and when I rev the engine. Mostly at start up but then gets more quiet. Once I start driving I don't hear it as much. I noticed it on day one 5 years ago and mentioned it to the dealership. They said it was normal. So far 56K miles and no problems. It will continue to 200K miles with no problems. I think you will find this is normal and in most crossfires.... get used to the noisy Mercedes engine.

You can spend the time and money replacing every part of the engine. The noise will keep coming back. The only thing you gain is a potential problem from the dealership. Why waste the time and headache letting some moron touch your car.... just ignore the noise or enjoy the noise. Every time you hear it say "It is a Mercedes engine". Your car engine will outlast most of our lives I am a pretty **** guy and I DO NOT ignore problems. I just don't think this is a problem at all.

If you wanted a really quiet car you should have bought a Lexus I will keep my noisy Mercedes engine.

That is odd, I have two SRT's and neither one of them ticks, clicks or makes a tapping noise like this...

My SRT6 with 35k never had this tick, and my 04 six-speed coupe with 65k does not have it either.

I have an 06 Limited Coupe with 8k miles on it and it makes the same noise. It is worse in the winter because I don't drive it when we have salt on the roads. I don't notice it as much in the summer when I drive the car daily. I don't trust the dealers to fix this with out causing me more problems so for now I am going to leave it.
