Default Rear cats delete?

After this falls Dragon event, I have decided NOT to go with the Magnaflow or Ansi exhaust on my 04 Coupe NA. They sound great to hear them go by, but just too much for me in the car. What someone did talk about was deleting the rear cats to get some sound. Anyone do this? Whats your expierence with the project? Is is a simple cut out the rear cats and weld in some stainless pipe in its place?

I figure I could always have them reinstalled if needed later.

James

I did a rear cat delete and love the sound. Same as before only more throaty. Ask people who have heard mine what they think.

It's not Magnaflow or Borla but, it ain't fart can either. Supposedly it adds three HP.

And it was easy, any muffler shop can do it.

Franc, I know you have a roadster, but is it very noticable in the cabin with the top up?

No shop in Illinois would do this cat delete.
$10.000 fine for tampering with the emissions on any car.
Although yes it will give a slightly deeper sound without any emissions test failures.
Trick is to fine that one shop that will do it for you

If you are that worried about removeing them and getting a fine just get a pair of used "cats", hollow them out and put those on. Your exhaust system will appear to have all 4 on but only 2 will be working.

The tone or the grin?

Not really. It is louder for the guy behind you but then he is usually fading off into the distance.

I deleted mine and all that is needed is two pieces of pipe welded in. I had this done when I was having the head pipes modified for the V8, so I can't compare the sound as I have only heard it cat delete with the V8.

+1

I deleted the rear cats on my 6, and it definitely sounds a bit more throaty, but not annoying and no drone in the cabin. Personally, I think this is what it should have sounded like stock (at least in the 6).

I originally did it last year and loved it. Gives just a little more throaty sound, which is just about right.

That's the first shop I went to and they said they wouldn't touch it.
I told them that the merc guys and you both told me they would but they wouldn't even consider it.
All I kept hearing is $10.000 fine.

Not important now anyway... I got the Ansa

I guess I had a little easier time. I just went in to have the head pipes slightly altered to bolt up to my V8 manifolds and shop manager who is a mercedes fan said "you should get rid of these, it's worth 10hp", so I said fine, cut them out. He went on to say that it was legal if they had to be removed because of road damage. So My story is my lowered car bashed them on a speed bump He went on to say that eventually they would fail and start to rattle and that was an expensive repair. Has anyone ever checked to see if there is a power gain?
