Question Cold Air Intakes

I have a 2005 Limited. I am looking at replacing just the stock flexible intake tubes with short pipes and cone filters, but leaving the air box. Should I remove the filters in the air box? I know this has been asked a thousand times but, can sucking in the hot air inside the engine compartment (thats where I plan on putting the cone filters) damage the engine? Will I notice an increase in HP? Thanks

RJ

By no means am I an expert, barely a novice if that, I'd say you don't want to do that...if I understand you right. What you will be doing is adding filters up front going through the same diameter pipe running to existing filters. I'd think this would just limit the amount of air even more so.

Even if it is a bit bigger, you will still have limited airflow because of the added filters and the point where the pipe reduces. I believe that is why all of the after market CAI's bypass the stock CAI.

But I'm sure one of these more knowledgeable ones will let us know.

I would remove the filters, the idea is to get more air into the system and less restriction, search the threads on CAI'S and I'm sure you'll find a lot more information, and different systems that work. A lot of people use the NeedsWings system as I also, and love the product.

I went the TVT Design CAI. They recently released a new version and the price is amazing: TVT Design, Crossfire Performance Parts - Chrysler Crossfire N/A

I recently installed a Needswings (Performance auto parts & aftermarket auto accessories for your car, specializing SRT4, Crossfire SRT6, SLK32, C32 AMG, VR-4) single CAI and I'm very happy with it. I also got the Mercedes engine cover to go with it. I recently drove out to Vegas and did see slightly improved HP and better gas mileages (went from 24-26 to 26-29 from my observations although not scientific).

I would not recommend removing the air filters. I would upgrade to K&N filters for the stock air intake if you don't want to go the CAI route. By not using the stock air filters and using a CAI with the filter in front, the air will be cooler compared to using the stock intake (which has the filters on top of the engine which will "cook" the air).

Yes, the single or dual N/A CAI will work.
