Default PO171 code

Symptoms are intermittent, occasionally idles rough at a stop light then stumbles while accelerating , once at speed she runs fine...
Had Auto Zone check and clear the code (PO171)
I'm leaning towards replacing the mass air flow sensor or possibly the EGR valve after checking for vacuum leaks.
What ever happened to just jumping in and getting your hands dirty....I've been researching this for the last few hrs. and still trying to get a handle on it.
Thanks for any insight or suggestions,
Bill,

It could be any one of these that can cause that code.
EVAP PURGE SOLENOID OPERATION
O2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT
RESTRICTED FUEL SUPPLY LINE
FUEL PUMP INLET STRAINER PLUGGED
O2 SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE SENSOR OPERATION
ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OPERATION
O2 SENSOR
ENGINE MECHANICAL PROBLEM
FUEL FILTER/PRESSURE REGULATOR

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE

Does it happen more when your fuel tank is low?

Robby,
Doesn't seem to matter if the fuel tank level is low or high.
The P0171 code I think is a lean mixture on bank one ?
So if I have my head on straight this morning, for it to be a fuel delivery problem I would have two error codes, both P0171 (bank one) and P0174(bank two) In my mind this kind of rules out the mass air flow sensor and does point to an 02 sensor but which one? I supose I should bite the bullet and invest in a decent code reader.
Thanks,
Bill,

Thought I'd update...
Though the car was running smoothly 99.9% of the time.
Thought I'd take a chance and clean the MAF with some CRC (mas air flow cleaner) feels like I've picked up another 25 HP. and after 900 miles has yet to throw a code.

Below is the generic print out from Auto Zone.

Would you be willing to elaborate on the steps as if you telling a slow person ? I am a complete novice at anything under the hood but am having the exact same issue you described and hate to take it in for service if I don't have to. I really appreciate it!

Do you have the "check engine light" on? I have a similar issue to what you are
describing, same error code. The Service boss at the local dealer suggests I have
"bad gasoline". The issue only occurs with my xfire while stopping on an incline.

I am no mechanic --- 2006 with 11000 miles
