After much debate and indecision I finally decided to gut my muffler. I simply cut a hole in the top, removed all of the packing and cut of the baffle circled below

I then had it welded back up (25$) and hit the muffler with some hi temp matte black paint.
It sounds much better, like it should have sounded from the factory. It has a much deeper growl to it, as well as sounding much throatier. Doesnt drone what so ever and its not overly loud, just right... for now

I did have one slight issue though, when I first cranked the car up it blew all of the left over carbon out of the muffler and coated the back of my car but other than that no problems

It'll work until the rear mount turbo steup is done here in about a month, then its just a 3" straight pipe

 

ditto on what Beaner said. So you said you cut out a hole on the top? So did you drop the muffler, where was it cut, then took it to a shop to be rewelded and then reinstalled? I liked the sound infinite, so would appreciate clearer directions for what you did. Thanks.

 

how restictive would you say that the stock muffler is? i putt a new exhaust on my car and i think that i have noticed somewhat of a difference, i dont know if its a placebo effect or not, or if i really increased the power somewhat, thanks JR

 

I cut a square, probably 8x8 out of the top of the muffler, then I removed the packing. Its a PITA because the packing around the perforated tubing is well attached.
Wear gloves because its messy.
Then I took a sawzall and cut the kidney shaped baffle out.
Be sure to take the time to clean out the muffler, I simply used soap and water then let it dry.
Then I had the top of the muffler welded back.
I hit it with matte black high temp spray paint and reinstalled the muffler.

I cant say just how much of a restriction the stock muffler is, it is baffled so thats a major source of the restriction, but I could say its not terribly bad for a stock muffler.

 

Reviving a dead thread.. cause I think I like this ... Just me or kinda a Ferrari sound from the clip?

 

My guess is we will never get a good quality sound clip, right?
