Default Oil Change Interval

I now walk to work so I rarely use my Crossfire I would say once a week or even two weeks
driving less then 20 miles.

Any suggestions for oil change interval?

I'd still do it annually, at least.

The Crossfire Enjoyment Police should confiscate that car and give it to a well deserving enthusiast.
Drive it for a good trip now and then to keep the condensation out of the engine and work the seals a little. As long as the condensation stays out of the engine the oil will last a long time. Go for 4 to 5,000 miles.

I would recommend a change in driving patterns.
On your days off, find the most enjoyable roads, either twisty in nature, or pretty with nature, and drive on them. The further away they are, the better.

Why own a nice car if you aren't going to drive it?

BC.

I probably drive my '07 maybe a little more than you, but not much. I put about 3000-3500 per year on the car. I just follow the XFire's oil change interval via the onboard maintenance system. So that put's me doing an oil change every couple of years. That's probably as long an interval between oil changes that I'd recommend.

Doesn't the computer figure out when it's time to change the oil? Based on driving performance and habits?

That's what Chrysler and Mercedes says.

I'd still change it annually, before putting it away for the winter, if you do that.

(But posts 3 and 4 really say it all...)

It's not always that cut and dry. My wife and I commute together and the Xfire stays in the garage all week. So I only drive it on the weekends. She finds it somewhat uncomfortable to ride in (which I disagree) so we drive her PT Cruiser during the week.

I would love to drive my car more, but I don't want to pay to park two cars a day.

thanks for the replies

I was thinking to go by the FSS too, but it will be about 2 years before I hit 7000 miles
I think I'm doing about 3K a year.

I change my oil last May.

Why would the oil need to be change anually if few miles are driven?

I don't like computers telling me anything, therefore, every fall, before they go to sleep, I change the oil.....I put about 4K a year on them both....

You have to change the oil every 5000 miles or once a year.

I'm logging about 3,500 a year. I always change the oil in the fall right before I put it down for the winter.

How do you decide which came first?

Suggest that you move further from work and enjoy the commute. And then change the oil every 5K miles.

But if you insist, change it annually DIY just for your own peace of mind.

Maybe I should have said 'I change the oil manually or once a year whichever comes first'.

I don't feel comfortable letting oil set in a car for more then a year. The additives have a shelf life even if the oil itself will sustain that long. I would say annually just like a couple of other poeple.

But then again, a friend told me a while ago that the Nissan dealership he worked for got a car in from a lady with an issue. They found the issue fairly quickly when, just on a hunch, he asked the lady when the last time she changed the oil. He said that she looked at him a little funny and asked why was that needed. She bought the nissan brand new and somehow managed over 100k miles, i forget the number he gave me....... He said the engine did not look pretty, but there is no telling if the maintenance was done or not, so she could have done it without knowing what she was doing.

So I may definitely be wrong, but by no means would I ever suggest doing the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I drive one of mine about 18-20K/year......90% highway. The FSS lets me go about 8,500 miles between oil changes....I always change it when it still says about 1,000 miles left. Mobil says at least once per year.

Just crossed the 60,000 mile mark ('07 stick with Lifetime Powertrain Warranty)....installed a new fuel filter $35 shipped from Rock Auto + $44 shop fees.....dealership wanted $299 for parts & labor.
