Engine, Exhaust, Transmission and DifferentialPost questions here that have to do with the engine, cooling system, air intake, exhaust, Transmission and Differential
My two bottle of AT-205 treatment just arrived. I'm going to wait until I have a driving journey before I add it to my oil. It says it takes five hours of driving to be effective. All I do right now is little short trips to the store. Be too hard to log little trips for tracking the time. I'll also have to remove some oil from the engine to allow for the 11oz of treatment I intend to add to engine. Right now my dip tells me my oil level is just a little over full.
Maybe I'll dry off the transmission and take a little ride down up to Jacksonville, Florida, which I've not been, after New Years. That's about 200 miles North of Tampa.
This morning I drained oil so that I could add the AP-205 Sealer. I drained a 1-1/2 quarts and the dip stick registered full. I started the engine and then re-checked and the dip stick said down 1/2 quart. I added back 1/2 quart and dipstick now says full. I'm thinking the previous owner had put an extra quart of oil in and excess oil was being pushed out thru the rear seal. I did not add the AP-205 until I drive around a bit to see if the drip problem has been rectified.
I finally bought some car ramps and was able to crawl under the car to see what was going on. There were no invisible oil leaks that I can find on the transmission bellhousing nor the engine bellhousing. Removed two tranny inspection plugs and no oil! I'll just have to monitor burning oul smell. It has got better since removing 1 quart of excessive oil from engine..

Are there really any invisible oil leaks? How would you tell if the oil is invisible, or if there was a low or high condition, let alone a leak... LOL

Can't find any oil leaks that would cause a smelly oil burn. Drove it around today and didn't smell buning oil. I'm guessing overfill of engine oil, 1 quart, was the culprit but can't figure out the burnt smell. Now I'm feeling more confident that I don't have a rear main seal leak.
I guess it could have been worse if after over a month you found very little oil in the sump.
The first thing you do when you buy a used car is replace the oil, who knows what crappy oil could be in there.

Good point. The oil was changed with Mobil-1 and is indicated on the windshield sticker. It only had about 50 miles since oil was changed when I bought it. There was also a quart of Mobil-1 in the hatch tool compartment.
