Hi anyone else using shell optimax (98 RON) in their xf ... bit more expensive but you can feel a lot of difference. Try it and see... (no I don't work for shell).

Yes I did and my engine warning light came and stayed on for about 2 days. Have not done it since.

With the Upsolute chip they recommend shell optimax. In my area the only Shell station is on the motorway at about 97p litre. I fill up with BP Super 97ron which is just fine, I've only filled up once with 95ron and there was certainly a change in the cars performance.

weird ... have run on optimax since new (only a month) no problems so far ... seems good to me.

MacJake? did you get the UPSOLUTE chip from the UK? did you have to send your CPU away? did it make a big difference? will it void the warranty? (hope you like questions).

Cheers,

btw ... the word weird is well ... weird ... "i" before "e" except after "c" ?

Cool Re: Fuel consumption

I have used Shell regular unleaded in the UK since February and no matter what I do I cannot manage more than around 240- 250 miles to the tank. I have driven it like a boy racer and also on cruise like Mr Sensible but no difference. Think I will just continue to enjoy it to the max because that's why I bought it, its only statistics after all! When times get tough I will need to speak to English Bob who seems to be the petrol guru or a man with an extra tank perhaps?

The Upsolute rep that I used was Simon Coe (CCC Technology) and it was the first Crossfire he had done but as I said, the slk320 engine he did check. It cost me £305 in June 04,their site quotes +20 hp and +20 torque,it is noticeable in 3 & 4 in auto.
He will come to your home or work where he will reprogram the ecu via his laptop. This will void your warranty if proved that it caused a problem but basically it is undetectable and can be reversed.
His number 01246 411021 mob: 07957240822.

www.upsolute.com and look up dealers in UK.

Simon was the only one at the time to bother to call me back and I believe he has worked on other UK owners cars with no complaints.

Have you made any mods to the car to get this mpg?

Just gone through the first tank of fuel and managed 20.5 miles per UK gallon, that's 2 mpg better than the RX8 we just traded.

I think english bobs math's are a little out, It's impossible to get the kind of mpg that he's talking about, I'm not saying he's lying just mistaken.

I only get that kind of mpg from my diesel Audi.

Is there a mpg indicator in the xf?
Not had it long and been working silly hours so have not read the owners book through.

I've just got to 11k miles today and filled up with 99ron at tesco's. Thought I'd give it a try at 92p litre with my voucher. (usually BP Super 97).
Put in 44 litres for 260 miles which means I'm averaging 27 mpg 50/50 motorway/town.
Anyone else used this fuel ?

My 20.5 is all town driving really, I just use 95 Ron as recommended.

I do almost all my driving around town. I use 93 octane exclusively. And I'm lucky if I get 300 miles on one tank and usually I only get about 20 mpg. Frankly, the poor mpg is the only real complaint I have about this car.

I just read everyone's posts and I'm actually surprised by the low numbers- I get around 350 miles per tank. I'd like to know what english_bob does to get such great mileage! I know I don't drive my car like it's stolen but there are definitely some fun moments!

When people say 'I get xxx miles out of a tank'...
What is your measuring point for the full tank?
Do you measure until the refuel light comes on or lower?

On my first tank still at miles and am one segment away from the light coming on.
This seems pretty bad as I have been driving really carefully in order to get the best mpg I can. Next time I fill up I will drive like I normally do and see if it's any different.
