Default silver piece around the windshield...

the clear coat has come off again. the guy ar the car wash said it was because the bugs ate it up in 24 hrs... it looks awful now. what is the best way to care for these/prevent this from happening again?

he said the acid in the bugs, if left on for over 24 hrs would eat through the clear coat and damage it.

so when a high pressure hose is used it would cause it to tear/rip off/up.

Cool Re: silver piece around the windshield...

Maybe his high pressure hose is blowing the clear coat off. Where do you live or drive that you would have that much bug residue on you car? This is one of the main reasons that I wash my car myself, and use only 1 coin operated self service car wash (owned by a friend). There are alot of things that can strip away your clear coat, poorly recycled/filtered water, the chemicals that the car wash is using may be to strong, I seriously doubt that this was caused by bug residue...switch to another car wash or better yet...wash it yourself. Remember that no one will take as much care with your car than you would.

I think its more like the chemicals and high pressure they use then the bugs.

i have a guy that hand washes my car every week for me for $20. he makes my car look amazing. he was busy and i was running late so i took it through one of those eager beaver/super suds car washes and they made it look like **** for $12.

i went to the dealer and they said it should be under warranty and that they will replace it.

i live in south west fla where the mosquitoes and love bugs are extremely abundant this time of year. especially when i drive 36K miles a year. lots of bugs!!!

Sounds odd. You could get a chrome one.
Might hold up better in your situation.

I'd get chrome or someone who cleans the paint before applying clear coat. If you don't sand or its dirty it won't stick. Seems to me that's your problem.

Do you live in Florida. This is the Love Bug season. They have an acid in their bodies that will eat right through the clear coat if not removed ASAP. You would have to get a tremendous amount of hits and not clean them off to get the effect you are getting.

The absolute BEST way to get bugs off the front of a car is to wet a "dryer sheet" and then scrub the bugs off. This works especially well for those darn LOVE Bugs down in Florida. It won't hurt the paint job or the clear coat. But if you leave the bugs on there for a couple weeks and their acid starts taking the clear coat off, well the dryer sheets won't do much for you by then. But this is just a tip, and it sounds crazy, but it works for me!
