HID vs Standard low beam question

HID vs Standard low beam question
Can some one explain why on both my Cadillac's with OEM HID low beams when you turn the high beams on the low beams stay on and on standard lights the low beams go off when you turn the high beams on. It seems you can see much better on high beam when the low beam remains on.
