Added a little bling to the engine bay.

I used VHT wrinkle paint cured in the over, and then topped it off with Hemi Orange ceramic high temp paint.
I did the valve covers in black, but they aren't going on until Sunday. If you think it sucks, say it. I don't mind. I'm looking for constructive and destructive criticism. :) Attachment 41819 Attachment 41820 Attachment 41821 Attachment 41822 |

I like that, I think I'll do my spare covers the same, I was thinking of black matte paint but I like the crinkle, it matches my skin.

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
Not too shabby at all! I'd like to see a final picture when you the black valve covers on.

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
Personally, I like it. I think wrinkle paint looks good on an engine, hi-gloss simply shows too much dirt.
Thumbs-up from me. |
Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
Do I sand the face of the Needwings letters to expose the bare metal like the photo below???

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
I like the look. Yes, get that Needswings logo shining.

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
Be very careful when sanding them, if some of the paint has not adhered too well to the aluminum it may just peel of around the corner. Maybe the surface could be done in black instead like the valve covers?

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
other than the way the "Needswings" logos were secured on, I agree the wrinkle paint and emblem top surface polish looks real great!

If three or four holes were drilled in the airbox out side, accurately, smaller than the letters were wide and countersunk if required. The NeedsWings logo could be welded from the inside, neat and no welds showing. |
Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
Looks really good, IIRC the manis should match, at least in color, the calipers you installed, right?
Nice way to tie it all together but not go over the top, the matte looks good as well. |
Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
I have been doing wrinkle for 55 years (fifth grade on radio chassis boxes), the trick is several coats to build up and a source of heat. If the heat is not even, the texture changes the tightness of the wrinkle and youll see it. Coating the black allows you to do any color, and I agree that it is cool. Woody

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
Thanks for all the responses.
I hate the mismatched bolts, but they are a bit of a necessity for now. I recently received a set of E55 bolts that I intend to use as replacements for the non-oem bolts in the photos. As for the Ferrari comments (180) I'd be more than happy to put one in it's place at the 1/4. :) Any other type of racing against one and I'd be the one weeping for sure. :( The color of the mani's is a close match to my calipers, so I thought it would work out okay. They aren't an exact match, but I'm okay with that. The engine bay was as boring and uneventful as a Fiero, so it's just nice to have something going on under the hood finally. After I install the valve covers this weekend, I'll post up photos of the completed (for now) project. Truth be told, if I'm not happy unless I'm modding the car. By the way, I'm going to wait a few days before sanding down the lettering, as it's not easy to undo. |

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
your engine needs some tampons to go with that color

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
Looks good, it won't say Ferrari because it is not. It's a Crossfire that is special too. Enjoy the car. I've been thinking of doing the valve cover in red on my car too. Bought the paint, ceramic caliper paint.

I installed the black wrinkles valve covers today while Nick and Steve stood by. :)

Nice! Looking sharp.

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
Has Steve even seen his valve covers? Man I won't even open my hood around you guys.

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
That looks freaking clean bro!!! Love it! Painted mine with hi-temp silver yesterday, fully cured today. Just waiting on gaskets, and voila!!! :p

Re: Added a little bling to the engine bay.
Thanks for all the positive comments. I really have no issue with negative remarks, as I know it's not for everyone. Anyway, I'm much happier with it now that the boring, all silver look is gone. For a while it was like I owned a SLK32 or Porsche, as I felt people were just walking by it to look at other Crossfires. That was for Steve's benefit. :)
Glad you got them painted, John. I ordered new gaskets also, and I'm sure that's the best bet. Truth be told, I considered reusing mine, but went ahead ordered new since I needed new mani's gaskets also. I also ordered a new gasket for the oil filler housing for good measure. Hopefully you and 180 will post up photos when the works done. |

I striped my manis and painted them wrinkle red. I went ahead and sanded down the lettering while I was at it. I definitely prefer the red over the orange. I'll install the passenger side mani in the morning.
