Default Dimmer switch

So I have put two VDO gauges mounted on my A pillar, so I would like to wire up the lights so I can read them at night, I would also like to have them dim with the dash lights. Has anybody done this, I need an easily accessed wire for this.

I would try D9 ( grey wire ) from the Illumination Control Module ( light switch )

Gray wire is the dash light power going to the dimmer in the panel, it will work but the VDO gauges will be bright all the time. Just tested that wire the voltage does not change when you twist the dimmer stick. Of course it better than no light in the gauge.

Can a wire or PCB conductor on the dash panel going to a bulb be used?
Or what I assume is a variable resistor is on the rear of the panel can a jumper wire be attached to it?
