I have an '04 Coupe (not limited that I know of).
Re: behind the license plate...
I just removed my temporary plates and saw the same hole, though mine has a cover (basically a matching paint-colored sticker) over it.
On a related note, is there supposed to be a rear plate bracket - or does the plate just bolt using the two holes in the trunk? Seems like the plate might scratch the paint, but mine has no bracket in the rear.

I used the hole to wire the "Reverse Guard System" (Black Frame). http://americanroadproductsinc.com/product_line.htm
It worked out quite well. You can snake the wires to the back tail lights quite easily...no drilling...quick install for the DIY.

Re: behind the license plate...
I had the dealer advertisement plates off mine before I got my plates from the California DMV... mine too has the hole, not plugged... I'll have to take the plate off again to look, but I thought I saw an allen bolt of some kind behind it. Possibly for the hatch latch?
HanSolo... thanks for the link... I will probably be getting one of those too... VERY useful for parking garages, etc.

Re: behind the (rear) license plate... (a hole!)
This is an old thread -- I'm searching for info on this hole behind my couple's rear license plate (2005). Mine was covered by a round piece of tape that looked like fancy duct tape.
I'm installing a back-up camera this morning and want to run the camera's wire through this hole. Underneath is a Torx -headed screw. Looking at the screw from the inside of the car (through the grille), it appears to attach to the metal frame. My guess is that this was a late-add to help address making the hatch latch more rigid, and the screw shouldn't be removed.
Any (serious) info from others on this? It would be great if the screw were there only to provide a way in/out for wires.

Re: behind the license plate...
(Mystery hole behind the rear license plate). The hole was orgionally covered with cheap tape that weathered away. It's purpose is to hold the center of the bumper tightly against the body. There are several other screws and nuts helping out. The bottom portion of the exhaust shield comes off with the bumper. When I bought my car,it came with free test miles from the previous owner. Including a paint scratch on the back bumper. After years of looking at this scratch,I couldn't take it anymore. The body shop said the bumper had to be removed for a quality paint job that wouldn't peel back over the years. $300.00 to remove and reinstall the bumper then $300.00 to refinish the small scratch, then paint the entire bumper. I saved $300.00 by taking off the bumper and reinstalling. Squirrel Crusher

There is a thread here somewhere on the details.
