Luckily this season I don't live by any of the fires. (knock-on-wood)

You and me both.
I was running some errands on Saturday morning and could see smoke from the 241 Toll Road and knew it just couldn't be from the Sylmar fires - just too darn far away. I called my wife at home and told her to turn on the TV to see what else was burning. We have several friends and relatives who live in Yorba Linda and Anaheim Hills, many of whom were evacuated but none of whom, fortunately, lost anything in the fires.
One friend of mine got a serious taste of "too close for comfort" though - 8 homes on the next street down the hill from hers were totally destroyed.
