Well you found me out, I built one as a kid, been doing the electrical thing for ever. Got most of my patents from my high school studys of Nikola Tesla, read all of his lab notes. Here are a few of the better videos and a photo of Nickola Tesla his self, enjoy, Woody Heck I even got to work on a MHD generator back in the day...

Cool links, Woody, thanks.
Me I think I'm going to build the flashlight laser first.
I always wanted one since I read "Ringworld".

Better yet, how about a phaser?

You can also build a $10 flashlight that outshines $100 ones:

a man after mine own heart. I first read L.N.'s Ringworld in 1974. It changed my habits forever. I have all of the Known Space series and only wish he were still poppin' them out.
And I would rather have a variable sword.
And Teela. Why do you think I married a girl named Tina?
OK, guys, I have come up with an invention.
Now I'll be able to lay down on the job, post on the forum and do product testing simultaneously!!
Max - I agree, variable swords are awesome. Just let me in on that stasis field and monofilament technology, and I'll whip up a few.

Holy Sci-fi, Jeff!
I helped build a Tesla coil back in high school, after school hours (when we'd use $5.00 worth of nitric acid to melt pennies to the size of dimes & then use them in pay phones. Big fun when your 16 & it's 1970!) when we could 'experiment' with it.
I may still have the scars.........
Actually, I think your last "invention" might just be the trick for my job. I'd love to move one of those into my tiny workspace, plop in it & then disappear into my own little world; kinda like Al Bundy used to do when he went "on vacation".
Sigh........
Ringworld by Larry Niven
"In the nighttime heart of Beirut, in one of a row of general-address transfer booths, Louis Wu flicked into reality".
Or Heinlein, Clarke, Ellison, Asimov, Bradbury, Silverberg, Herbert, Lovecraft; your making me want to start diving back into the collection again.

Holy crap, Max! Got 3 nice sized bookcases myself! That's for the SF.
Then you've got to have your humor section, history section, ancient world section, oh heck.........
I cannot wait to meet you guys in a few weeks!
You guys have really got me thinking about some classic sci-fi now, so today I brought in Sturgeon's "More Than Human" for boredom relief.
