H1N1 Swine Flu a big bust?
Earlier this year we heard about all the deaths in Mexico resulting from people contracting what we now call the H1N1 virus. After millions of dollars being spent on the vaccine to combat the disease we appear to have the vaccine available and it is being met with a collective yawn.
In Canada the vaccine was going to be given to those groups deemed most at risk if they got the illness, the most vulnerable first and healthy old gits like me last as we were deemed to have more resistance to the illness, or expendable who knows.
Initially clinics were overrun by people including people who thought that they should have it even though they were not in the demographic that was being inoculated at that time. A highly reported case of a young boy dying from the complications led to a further flood of people at the clinics, so much so that the vaccine demand out paced the production.
Since that time the flood has been reduced to a trickle and millions of doses are expected to be sold overseas due to lack of demand. My age group was due to be done by Xmas but due to the lack of demand I had mine last week.
Now we come to the real question, was this over hyped as deaths from this flu have been lower than deaths from the normal flu season so far. I think that in these cases we have to be safe rather than sorry, if a real killer comes around I hope they don't use this case as an excuse not to be proactive.
Those that skip this vaccination period may live to regret it when the expected recurrence happens next spring, of course they will blame someone else but we may have minimal stocks of the vaccine by then.
How is this being handled in the States, do you have a similar situation there?
