We are supposed to get hit by a hurricane here in NJ, and we are supposed to be affected by it and I am worried about my crossfire's well being. Advance auto parts and a few other local stores have been boarding up their windows, and Long Beach Island was supposed to be evacuated earlier today ( best of luck to you on LBI i know acrispy1 and AZN are on the long island)

im very concerned about my car, being as though my parents already took dibs on the garage, im forced to leave my car outside in the driveway, and since i am on the water i am a bit nervous of flooding and debris blown into it!

does anybody have any ideas or tips to help me through the storm without my baby getting beat up?

Why people panic so much over a hurricane? I am a Long Islander! I lived through Hurricane Gloria and many others. During Gloria we didn't have electricity for a week. Every tree in my neighborhood came falling down. We just dealt with it! I have seen houses on fire island get washed away by storms much bigger than this one. We rebuilt everything! We dealt with it! We didn't complain! And we moved on! Those were bad storms much stronger and worse then this one. The media just loves to hype everything up and make people panic. Now they have you in a panic. This storm will come and go. It will knock some trees down and do damage. But this is not something new.

My advice... just do your typical routine and prepare. Don't park under a tree and your car will be ok. Stay inside and relax. No need to panic! Everything will be ok... trust me.

 

I live on long island right by the south shore, I'm just gona sit around, watch the storm pass and hope for the best. Nothing you can really do but run for the hills And I don't plan on doing that. Like blackcrossfire07 said, park away from trees, that's what I'm doin.

 

Sorry blackcrossfire07, but 70 Mile an hour winds mean damaging debris on the warpath.

No garage...... chances are better than 50/50 something will ding the car.

Don't leave LI to save your life but if you cannot improve those odds for the Crossfire, And it is that important to you, get it to a safer place than your driveway.

The government isn't going to help you at all. Your insurance company might write a check. Parts are impossible to find....So, apparently, is common sense.

Check out a local storage places. You might get a deal on a temporary shelter space for one month. Is protecting your car worth $150 bucks?

It'll cost you that much to drive inland and stay at a motel.

 

Nothing wrong with taking precautions. Do you you have a local parking garage (that's safe and preferrably above ground) where you could keep it unitl the storm passes. It will keep it dry, away from trees and flying debris and also likely only cost you 20-40 bucks (or less). Also, park it toward the center of the garage and on a middle floor.

Just a thought.

 

We are looking at a beautiful weekend here take a road trip about a 6hr drive inland and hang with us!! Beer will be supplied... I'll throw a kcuF you Irene party... LOL

 

PNA gave you the same advice I was going to give you. That's what I would do if I didn't have a garage to park my car in.

Franc... not really. 70 mile an hour winds does not mean you will definitely get damage. 70 mile an hour winds are really a joke in Texas. Living in Dallas and other parts of Texas 70 mile an hour winds can come with a spring rain storm. I have been on the road in Dallas during some severe weather and high winds (tornado type of activity) and I always worried more about hail damage then something else hitting my car. Yes, 70 mph winds hitting the right spot can flip over a tall tractor trailer.... I have seen that happen. But that is why I say don't park under any trees and you will be ok.

Heck... I drive my car at 70 mile per hour and faster here in Texas. No problem!

 

By the way... I grew up on the bay (south shore) and survived many hurricanes on Long Island that were much stronger then this one. The biggest problem was protecting the boat and keeping it from getting banged up. Then we worried about the sea water coming on land. Fire Island always helped to protect us from the ocean....

 

I'm not going to get into a p!ssing match with you here. 70 MPH winds are a minimum expectation for Long Island. could be worse. 70MPH will carry sand, small gravel, errant realtor signs and tree branches. Not something you would face on the interstate in Texas.

Like I said, common sense ain't all that common.

As to the car... find a place to park it inside.

But if YOU are in the path of something you think is gonna be a big problem... just take the weekend off and go west, young man! I have a friend in Wilmington, NC and I TOLD her to take the weekend and leave town. But, she's gonna stay - she's only 5 miles from the beach - I'd just leave for the weekend.

 

Take your car and your girlfriend to the Poconos for the weekend. Nice and high, and you can have a good time. Second best is the parking garage idea. Last is finding a 15x10' storage unit and renting it for a month...but I think you just ran out of time. Good luck. Everyone report in after the storm.

PS - I survived Hurricane Andrew in '92 but I was living on the Gulf coast of FLA. Just some wind and rain - all we lost were some palm fronds. No so lucky in Homestead, but that was a Cat 4-5.

 

No p!ssing match here.... just saying a lot of sand and dirt can hit your car at 70MPH or even 135MPH while driving on the interstate any day of the week. Your car will be ok. It is the big things that matter which is why I say... don't park under a tree or near anything that can cause damage his car will be ok. The chances of a problem are a lot less than you think. I have been through plenty of hurricanes and left my car outside. Not one scratch. The only severe weather than ever scared me was large hail. That is it!

 

Much stronger than this one? They're calling it the biggest hurricane to hit us in decades. I've lived in NY city and Long Island my whole life this is the first time that we have had mandatory evacuation in the city and parts of Long Island that never had to be evacuated before. We have high tide to begin with and add the hurricane on to that and we are talking about serious flooding and beach erosion. By the way they are calling for winds over 100mph east of the eye which means Long Island is going to have a lot of trees down along with power lines. We have already had record amount of rain so the ground is soft making it easier for trees to come down.

As far as protecting my cars we have 10 cars and a 2 car garage = 8 will be out in the elements. Taking covers off being that it will make no sense to have them covered and pray for the best. Any damage oh well, that's why we pay for insurance. As long as my family is safe the cars or any damage to my home will be repaired. Keeping our fingers crossed and a little praying..

 

I would say Hurricane Gloria was the worst that I could remember. Winds over 115 MPH. They did evacuate parts of Long Island and obviously Fire Island. I think this hurricane is no different than the many others that came through Long Island... the reason for the evacuations is a result of Katrina. Years ago nobody evacuated... they do now because of the hype around Katrina. I just think the media blows everything up saying this is the worst in 70 years and they are expecting the subway tunnels to flood. This is certainly not the worst hurricane to hit us in 70 years. I don't know.... but we will see.
