Default Progressive Snapshot Discount - Scam?

So I recently switched the SRT and toyota to Progressive and saved a few hundred dollars. Super!

Then they offered me a Snapshot discount to save even more money. Super!

Simply take their USB device and plug it into the cars and allow it to log my driving times, distances, lateral G's (turning speed), and hard breaking. They promise that they will not use the device to raise rates- only lower or remain the same. They also claim that the device does not have a GPS signal to locate your whereabouts. Sounds easy enough until I get an email today asking me why I haven't plugged in my Snapshot USB devices yet.

I then realize that they dont rely on me to mail back the device with the logged data so that they can view my driving habits. Instead, they actually have a live feed of what is going on with the car. Interesting.... a device that doesnt have some sort of GPS is capable of transmitting a signal from my car to their computer wirelessly? Now I may not be a wiz kid, but I find this difficult to grasp.

Also, they can see the distance and time of each route. Well according to my calculations speed is a direct measurement of distance and time. Therefore if they see I traveled 80 miles in 1 hour, they should assume that I was going well over 80 mph for the trip.

Am I being paranoid here or is this making perfect sense? I intend on mailing these incriminating little bugs back to them in the morning. I'll pay the extra 10% just to avoid the feeling of a spy sitting under the dash.

Allstate offered me the same option at my last renewal. The agent did tell me it was wireless and sent data to Allstate all the time, but wasn't sure of the details. He also said it did NOT have a GPS feature on it. He told me it sent alerts if you traveled over 80mph or drove after 12 midnight. He also claimed it would not raise my rates, but would allow a discount if I agreed.

I declined.

James

How does a device send a wireless signal unless it has a satellite that can ping its signal?

They must be WiFi capable and jump on any open WiFi to transmit.. I don't like the thought of them recording my driving...

A friend (remain nameless) who is an Insurance investigator told me to stay away from any ins co that using those devices, as they would become mandatory, if enough people just try them.. he also said they use the cell towers to transmit there info back to the Manufacturer, who sends it to the ins co.,,,,,, so repost this on any and all fourms you are on. jim

PS She also has used the info from one or both drivers if they had ever used one,, in investigating an accident.

I actually had one placed in my Crossfire. I thought, what the hell, why not try it?

Good behavior only lasted about a week. Then I start forgetting the device is in the car, then, I went to dragon with it.

WELL....I am pretty sure after the dragon run, they absolutely won't offer me any discounted rates.
