should I buy a convertible?
I am looking to buy a "fun car"...Took a slk for a test ride last week...great car, but I want a stick shift. I love the look of a crossfire. but all I read is problems with the back window. From what I read, it looks like if I am not the original owner ..I am SOL. Plus, were different tops made for southernstates? I am in the southern part of New Jersey. Having never driven a crossfire..I assume they drive the same as a slk. Any input ? Thanks ED DAVIS new member
Well Ed...it is what it is...you could get a roadster with a bad top, or you could get one with a good top. Roll of the dice kind of thing. Mine has been fine, no problems, but I don't live where the sun shines very hot all the time..... They drive about the same as it's MB cousin.... YOU are on the XF site so of course you will get "why yes, I would buy a crossfire in a heartbeat!" answer....Good luck with your search...if you want a real thrill, forget the stick and get an SRT....and yes, I am bias on that subject as well....

Welcome to the forum Ed.
All Crossfires verts came with the same top. More windows seem to fall out in convertibles that have spent most of their time in warmer climates.
Chrysler's warranty seems to favor original owners from the Southern states. Never was able to figure out how Chrysler came to that conclusion. Must have something to do with it not being a "dry heat".

Personally, my feelings are, unless you're into drag racing, the non "SRT" version is fine. (But then I'm biased because I drive a stick).

The issues with the convertable top are not that common, just important to those here who have had the experince. Stay away from the 2005 models you'll bwe fine there. Besides, it is not big deal anymore as the 2005 tops are ALL coming of age for replacement.
$3,000.000 your are done for 10 more years.
Don't listen to Oledoc2U. He is old and crotchety and too damm lazy to shift for hisself.
Get that vert, MB or Crossfire with the six speed and enjoy. BTW I have both a 6 spd and an SRT auto. So I have no bias. Well yes I do....get the manual,get the ragtop,,,,,then drive like you meant to do that.
Roadster with a stick;
"The way it was meant to be"
[QUOTE=ed davis;742028]I am looking to buy a "fun car".. A well preserved X-fire will fit the bill of fun car for not a lot of money. I'd suggest stay away from a dealer unless you have to, since they will at the very least be at a premium. Vert, Coupe or Srt?...Depends on what you drive. I was looking for a nice riding cruiser, since i have a 150km round trip to work. Also, i don't live in a big city, nor have the consistent weather to justify a ragtop, and the Srt while it's a missile; my understanding is the ride has been sacrificed, for performance. So for me, it's the 6 spd Coupe, cuz I do like rowing the gears. Rides like a dream, corners flat, and is quiet down the highway even with the windows down. I'd suggest you look for a low mileage unit that has been pampered, and you shouldn't have to spend more than 10grand.ish. When you read the posts here, you'll see most of us have had many different cars, some of which we should have kept, but the overall opinion is the x-fire is an awesome car.
Good luck in your search, try not to make a rush purchase.

Ed,
I have a 6 speed convertible I'm looking to sell. I bought it from a forum member in NJ last year. It's a great car and I love it, but I just bought a BMW Z4. I've done a lot of maintenance and fixed the typical Crossfire issues I have come across. The back window of the top is rock solid. I have it listed in the FS section.
Let me know if interested!
