Default Emissions

I do not understand why car manufactures feel its feasible to spend billions every year in the design and implementation of exhaust systems to meet the governments new emission standards when the solution is to burn less fuel. I understand oil company's are greedy what ever raise the price of gas to 50 bucks a gallon if a gallon will go 300 miles. My current daily is an 03 wrx I built it to 390hp at 32psi and I'm running turbo xs utec for engine management. When on the high way cruise set at 65mph I'm able to manually with my lap top tune the cars fuel out flat and get 90 to 98 mpg. This is at a constant rpm though but it's still awesome for long trips why this isn't standard on all cars is complete bs.

I am old school. We had guys back in the 60's and 70's building carburetors and tuning with cars reaching 70mpg. Their work was quickly bought out. Who do you suppose bought the patents and copyrights? We use to ticker a bit with mileage, but it always hurt performance. There's no reason today with computer technology and the ability to right programs, and monitor the performance parameters of an engine, it can't be done. Someone in the industry has that answer.
