There might be a problem of interference with the existing lid. But I think the right design could be made to work. I hadn't even thought about this area of the car before but after sitting in the cockpit with these ideas in mind, it seems a very plausable concept.

Putting and insert in the console compartment is a simple way to do it. I like that idea also. But it makes the drink hard to reach. Especially if you're a bit portly or old. (sorry guys, had to say it).
The console one could be black and fit inside or match the brushed metal finish and replace the current lid.

Let's keep thinking on this one. I think we are getting somewhere.

I got my special edition in OHIO. They sell only classy stuff there.
Where did you get yours?

Seriously, if you gear heads could read the big words, I said "brushed metal finish." You can get it in a can at LOWES.

I am ALL for turning the pop-out ashtray into a cup holder. That seems ideal to me.

Also, anyone that can make a snap-on replacement for the ashtray fold-down cover (that hides the change holder) so that it would hold a cell phone or an ipod - now THAT would get my wallet talking!

Also, while we're talking about dash mods, does anyone know the part number of the SLK dash insert that puts a pocket/storage area in the dash where our air bag light is? That is THE most wasted space on the dash. They could have put that light anywhere, but they decided to waste a whole section of the center console - how ridiculous!

Tom 2112

That's where i put my cell phone also. It works OK for that. Would be better if modified for that purpose.

The change thing is OK but doesn't hold enough coins for any serious toll road use. Kinda useless with E-pass anyway.

I don't think the engineering went to crap. They just made some poor (and I think hasty) design decisions. Such as: the cup holder, the airbag light, the lack of ANYWHERE to put your cell phone, the lack of anywhere convenient to put a small stash of CD's.

Don't get me wrong. I still LOVE the car. It is so close to perfect, if they would have just taken a few more steps.

ok your right. i do love the car. it seems to have more problems than my slk32 (i dont understand why) but yes i guess there all just hasty decisions, ugh you think they wouldnt make hasty decisions on a 46000 dollar object

Yeah, I know what you mean. But I think the reason they could sell it for $46k instead of what the SLK was selling for was because of hasty decisions. LOL.

It does boggle the mind why they left the interior 98% identical to the SLK and then screwed up the cup holder and cubby.

ric i dont mean to change the thread but have you thought about making some eyelids for this car? i know they currently make them but its a pita to get and maybe a new design would be neat. idk just a thought. and for the cup holder i would like something that was more permanent than something i have to put on eveytime i get a cup. by that i mean i dont see myself enjoying haveing a cupholder getting thrown around in the trunk until i get a drink then i take it out and the parking lot and set it up

This cupholder thing is killing me. See attached picture.
parts list;
cupholder (autozone $7.00)
2 pieces of velcro (free, wifes sewing box)

Over 24 years of service in US Navy and 2 years of testing in my 05 coupe under extreme G loading have resulted in zero cup holder failures. Wife has no problem sitting in seat with mod attached and does not block shifter, seat belt or center console. If you have a large passenger, cup holder is removable (velcro) and stows in trunk (clever design velcro sticks to carpet in trunk also, stow and go at no addition cost). Note the advanced design, two cup holders and cell phone holder. Willing to sell as kit for $350. Kit will include mounting templet, all parts and toll free support. Coffee cup not included, display only. Willing to utilize military experience on missile and gun systems to design gyro stabilized Mod 2 version for interested parties.

Would it be stupid to suggest that you make somethign that snaps onto the seat adjestment lever on the base models. I put my cups/cans there but it's not very stable while driving. Works just fine when I'm nto moving though so it might be somewhere to start. Don't know what to tell you guy's with those fancy electric seats other than to upgrade to manual seats.

The only problem with putting the cup holder in the glove box is there is 2 differant designs for the glove box depending on what year you have. One design drops down and makes it level with the floor. The other design is the a goor flips open and you reach staight in. This might be a problem in that model

Plus the glove box isn't exactly convenient to reach over and put your drink down while you're driving...

especially for us poor bastards with short arms!
