Default Swapping out switches and dials

I am trying to swap out all of my switches or modify mine to be black. I love my N/A 04 Alabaster beauty but from day one I have grinned and bared the silver console. I love the door silver accents but the console being a huge river of silver has not appealed to me. Just my personal opinion. I am going to have SRT SIX put some of his super cool carbon fiber overlay on the entire console, sides, shift **** and some other bits like the cargo divider behind the seats, couple little pieces. Looking at some pics the last piece to make it flow the way I want are the switches.

Doing a lot of searches on the forums and on the interweb it appears that the switches are common on the MB SLK. Nothing I know of has a switch that has a similar graphic on it for the rear spoiler, BUT if there is a blank switch that has the same function that would be just fine.

Alternatively has anyone done this? are there other options for changing the color of the switches to black? I would love some of your opinions on this.....

Thanks!

Looks like you're looking to go this route. I did these in my last corssfire but never got around to finishing the console. These are switches out of an SLK, an SL, an ML and a C. Can't remember where I got them all but the SLK one will only get you the lock, seat heaters and tow alarm switches. The ESP came from I believe an ML and the trunk from a SL but don't hold me to that, and if I remember right, the windows are actually rear window switches from an E. The climate controls are straight off an SLK as well. It won't be cheap getting all of them but I hope this helps.

Those are the switches im looking for, YES! What did you use for the rear spoiler switch? the icon on the one in your picture sure looks like the crossfire icon.

For the climate control module did you need to cut out the temp control wheel to accomidate the square wheels?

Its good to know that the wiring is the same too. that would have been a deal breaker!

Thanks

Yes, you'll have to cut out the hole for the dials as they are wider. If you're going to be painting the console anyways, it shouldn't be a big deal.

Thanks for the info. So yea this is just a piece of a larger interior change that I want to do. Seems like you have been through this in one form already.

Ill need to remove the entire center console for the graphics overlay process. I want the silver all covered and the sides of the console that peel (15k?) covered as well. I'm wondering if it wouldnt be better to have the sides covered in some material?

The rear section seems prety straight forward but the front may be a bit trickey. Are there any gotcha's when removing the center console?

Im also going to be doing the trim above the gauge cluster, do you just pull that off?

Thanks

I have been wanting to do the center all black pretty much since I got the car but the buttons are what is holding me back. One option I thought of was masking out the circle dimples and spraying around, not sure how that would turn out though. If you do find all the kits needed to get all the switches please let me know. I walked by a c32 the other day and was super jealous of the console.

Been doing some looking around and found another option that somebody else has done. (in a celica) They used a transparent model paint and the illumination shows through. (was a candy red) I'm wondering if you could use a smoke color to achieve black buttons but still have illumination. It wouldn't help much without the lights on obviously but might be something worth looking into. It is down to that or masking the dimples for me at this point. The silver and stock radio are killing me.

I just put the black switches in and started trimming to allow room for the wider dials. So far everything has been easy. looks much better than the silver in my opinion!

The climate controls I am useing. A little modifying of the plastic trim to fit in the wider temp adjustment. If someone wants me to stop putting up pics in this thread just say so and I will stop. I know they are not the best quality but its the best I can do at the moment

beaner when you get yours installed would you check something for me?
when the fan switch is on the first dot it doesnt seem to heat my car at a stop. when moving it is fine and the 1 position will run me out of the cab! check yours and let me know if the first dot runs when you are stopped

thanx!

Sure thing! It wont be installed in the car asap so you may have to wait, it depends on how long it takes me to mess around with my cupholder and make it look like came from the factory like that.

Have that same issue, I thought that was just how it was built. once you pass the fan picture the fan turns on but the dot before that just seems to open the vent. I find myself switching between the 1 until it is too hot and then the first dot to just maintain the temp. (using the xfire controls though, not one from another MB)

EDIT:: Also I prefer the xfire dial style, would it just be to hard to pull out the dials and ***** and paint? or did you switch the entire unit just for ease?

If you just paint them they will still "light up" but you cant see it because of the paint. you can change the 3 buttons in the center but still have dials to deal with

Once I took everything apart I realized how big of a job it was going to be to try to get in there and take it all apart.

Did you just pick up a brand new controller or did you find one used? I have everything painted now just need to swap out the switches etc (still looking for for all the MB models i will need to get them all) and I am done. I was looking at this controller on ebay but wasn't 100% sure it was correct
