Anyone Paint Their Own Console? (Silver Pieces)
Ok here is the breakdown back to front before I forget. Don't mind the xfire caps these are the Benz switches.

Heated seats: 210 820 01 51 (1pc with switches and housing)
Trunk/Spoiler: 210 820 69 10 (single side/light + center red light)
Original MB button in that position is 210 820 22 10 (single side/light)
Tow alarm: 210 820 59 10 (single side/light + center red light)
Hazard/locks/traction: 170 820 24 10 (1pc)
Windows: 170 820 15 10 (double sided/single light + multi position)
The Chrysler spoiler button is double sided/double light + center red light. I am not sure of the MB equivalent but any double sided would probably work if you want to do the amber conversion. Could also gut the chrysler one and replace the LEDs as outlined in the color change threads.

I appreciate this good info. Looks like most sellers on ebay are listing the parts via car model number. I see a hazard assembly which has all but one switch I need. The assembly comes off a C 43. Would that be a keeper?

Good info. Now for the final piece. There are two Heater controllers. One has black dials and the other has silver. Which model matches closest to what we already have?
The face is just personal preference I'm pretty sure, I wanted mine all black but there are a lot more with the white faces available (the gauge cluster face is white in the SLK so the heater matched) The big thing to look out for is really the back side of the unit. You can see part of it on the previous page with mine side by side. The xfire unit has a large back piece that the wire harness plugs into and the arms are able to swivel at the base. The MB unit I have has the plug right on the back and the arms are solid. As stated before, mine works but if you can find one that is more like the xfire style in the back it would prob be a better choice. I might have some pics if needed but the difference is pretty obvious when looking down from the top, the xfire unit is way deeper and you can see the hole for the connector.
I think I have figured out the part numbers for the heater control unit. Part number 210 830 3185 is the unit that resembles the xfire unit. Check out the pictures from 97 - 00 Mercedes C Class Climate Heater AC Control LKQ | eBay.
Ther unit with the white dials has a different number.. 170 8300 785. Please advise before i commit to buy! Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it!

I hope it works too! That is the one I was gonna buy! Keep us posted when it arrives as to whether it is really the one we need to get! Everyone getting ready for winter projects on the xfires! Love it!!
Sorry Jedi
I would have not bought it if I new you had dibs, But the link in your post was for a different one. So I did not know that was the one you were looking at
Sorry again

Hey Sive, Apology not necessary. I was hoping that Airscape would have responding sooner so that I could have made the purchase. Would you agree that based on Airscape's part description; the part that you purchased is the one we need to get for this conversion? I'm sure I'll find one too so no big deal. Now to find that elusive trunk button!
I have had the proper heater controle part number posted somewhere on the forum before. I took a pic of the part with the number in view. If it cant be found in the gallery somewhere I will check the house computer when I get home hopefully this weekend
Sorry guys didn't get the response email. (habbit of unsubscribing instead of following the link) Looking at the pic it looks to be like the xfire one but mine is not the same as either (but basically the 170 series one with black face) Either way they should both work, I am just making the assumption the xfire style one would fit best/install easier but I do not have any experience to go by. Let me know though as I would not mind getting another to get rid of my intermittent issue with it turning itself on. I basically went with the cheapest one I could find with no damage/wear on the dials/buttons.
One suggestion I do have though (if not already mentioned) is to sand the temp dials down on the outside of the dial instead of widening the xfire plate to make them fit. There is very little protrusion so the outsides are basically covered by the plate and not visible. I gave a couple quick scrapes around the faceplate holes but just for final adjustment of the fit as the rounded corners are a bit tight. I have yet to do the lighting conversion but hope to get on it soon, have been debating full amber for a while but will prob stay with green.

210 830 3185 is the correct number. They come with amber bulbs that are easy to change out with to the green ones from the factory unit
Thanks Beaner for the confirmation on the heater controller. I am starting to see Rudy's pain in getting that darn trunk switch. I have seen a couple on ebay but with shipping will be around 30 - 40 bucks. Now i justhave to wait for my controller to arrive so that I can work on changing those bulbs! Hopefully they can be removed without soldering! Thanks to Airscape also for all the input you have given with this project.

The only "lights/bulbs" I changed was in the heater controls. I just used the black covers and my origional switches. Another smart thing to do would be to put the black button covers and heater controle ***** on the factory unit and paint the silver temp spinny controls black... Just a thought. Might be a better way to go so there is no modifing the trim piece to accomidate for the different style
If I paint my temp whels and just change the buttons........that would be some expensive buttons! Still an idea to contemplate though. Thanks for the tips.
Ok Beaner! Not sounding helpless here but I would hate to ruin my controller. I managed to separate the front of the controller to gain access to the circuit board. I tried lifting the circuit board but it has quite a bit of resistance and I would hate to break it. How did you access the lights in order to change them and were they soldered? Thanks for the help.
Oops! Too late! One pull too many and my board cracked. So i guess I will be using stock controller and painting the temperature wheels. Any tips on the painting aspect? And then depression set in........................................

I need to learn a little patience. At least I know how to change the lights now. I ended up buying the trunk switch from mercedes. It was still 20 bucks cheaper than anyone on ebay. I was looking at the roll bar switch and wondering if it would fit for my convertible switch. MERCEDES SL 129 90-02 ROLL BAR CONTROL SWITCH | eBay
