Default Gauge upgrade...

Having been on the forums for, oh, almost four years, I've learned not to ask the question "Is it possible". It always brings the answer "Anything is possible with enough time and money".

Yet, I can't help but wonder, is it 'feasible to expect to be able to make a gauge upgrade with a reasonable amount of cash and a reasonably clean vocabulary during the install?

What I have in mind is one of two options:
  • Upgrade the speedometer with an SRT-6 speedo (200mph)
  • Upgrade all gauge panels, using the white gauge faces from a Mercedes (I think they go up to 180mph)
It's not a huge priority at the moment, as I'm saving for some other things. My biggest question is whether or not the units are interchangeable using factory wiring.

If the SRT gauges are not an option, I would LOVE to have white-faced gauges to match the exterior and be just a little different.

For those wondering, yes I plan to justify the increase in mph reading in the future, if the Rotrex kit becomes a reality.

Thoughts?

This was actually one of my near future plans..

I wanted to be able to offer different gauge faces (colors, logos, ect..).

I have not done any work on this yet. I dont even know how simple or complex it will be to get the cluster out. It only thoughts in my head as of now.

It would not be entire new units though. Just an interchangeable face.

I was thinking more in the line of full replacements, not overlays.

Granted the new MSRP would be ridiculous... but since our gauges are electronic, not analog, it would seem that you could simply plug in the gauges from another car and they would work. Right? Or wrong?

These guys... I know the backlighting would be amber, and honestly that's okay with me... The green reminds me of Ford.

If it is strictly for visual purposes why would you spend so much money on it with a new unit instead of just putting in a new face. Those clusters are $900 from chrysler. Benz will probably charge even more for theirs.

I can make a Face identical to that one for next to nothing

Two things:
  • I won't be buying brand-new. I'm simply asking what's involved in a changeover. Star-DAS?
  • If the Rotrex build becomes a reality, who is to say the 180mph speedo WON'T be functional?

John,

I think that changing out that cluster requires much more than you are willing to undertake. I am fairly certain it is heavily intertwined with all the other electronics in the car....

Ask Rudy LOL

I was sitting in a Chrysler 300 the other day, wondering what it would take to get those white gauge faces into my Crossfire. I find the stock ones hard to read.

Rudy, I meant to text you earlier about this.

Is this relatively feasible with the appropriate tuning software?

Providing, of course, I can score a set of these used. MSRP is nuts.

I'll take Steve's when he isn't looking. It's not like he's driving his car until he gets the Wavetrac anyway, LMFAO

Steve, that was the nicest compliment I've EVER received about my weight. LOL 200lbs. HAH! And about that password, I think we might get one when we send a picture of the car to the guy that built the engine. I'm sure he'd be proud of where it ended up.

I talked with Rudy; not an easy task at all, considering the VIN is hard-coded into the gauge assembly.

It stinks, because I would really like to do this. Honestly, the most fail-safe way would be to have the faces made custom to fit your OEM cluster which matches your VIN.

Still, good find and it rekindled the flame a bit.

The conversation with Rudy was 60 days ago as well.

I had forgotten about the thread until I saw it pop up.
