Default Knee protection driver side

Hi all,
Me being quite tall and long legged (1.90m) am always trying to find a way to make the cockpit somewhat bigger. Now, regarding the knee pad on driver side is it possible to remove? I guess it would be on passenger side aswell if it was really necessary, or?
Any other hints on making the cockpit big enough?

Okay but how bad is it to remove this one? I mean, if there is no protection for the passenger side.. then why for driver side? Thanks for the links guys!

Okay, only on US cars. The European models does not have the knee bolster. Mine is coming off asap.
