Default Ashtray fix w/o replacement.

Hey all,

Ashtray when pushed closed will not stay shut. Spring keeps pushing it out an inch. I can push the tray into the compartment but it wont latch. I need a quick fix solution. Its annoying how it doesnt close. I fixed a piece of cardboard under the coinslot area as a temporary fix.

Any advice besides "buy a replacement" (unless it is absolutely necessary) would b much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, and a happy XF new year to u all.

Rax

Same thing just happenned to mine. Did you ever find the quick fix or did you have to replace it?

*I took apart the ashtray setup, held it at the 'closed' position, drilled a hole and secured it with a small bolt/nut. No, I can't use the ashtray, but I never did anyway.

*My car is a 2001 SLK230, but I assume they are similar.

Same thing has happened to my wife's. Went in somewhere to grab a bite and when we came out the ash tray was open and wouldn't close again. Any ideas before I take the dash apart?

I took the spring off as a quick fix. Other than that replacement of the complete assembly is the other solution. Removing the spring like I did was ok for me because I don't smoke and use the ashtray for house keys. Good luck!

You will have to remove the radio and bezel/panel around radio. The ashtray will have a "lid" over the spring right on top of it. The spring is a "band" not a coil. Snap off the lid and pull the spring attachment in the front and it will release the re-coil mechanism. Snap the lid back on and put everything back together. Only problem is when you close the ashtray all the way you will need long nails to pull it open or as I do, use a credit card. Once separated just a little you can open with your fingers.
good luck!

ash tray popped out yesterday..... I would like to find a replacement but it appears that the entire assembly including 12 Volt cigarette lighter has to be purchased and the cheapest I've seen it is over $100. I'll be doing this temporary fix for now, thanks for the write up.

After this mod/fix, tack a **** type gripper to the front of the ashtray and you can open it up much easier. Also saves the paint/coating on the surrounding trim panels. Just a suggestion.

I guess you don't use a 6" spike as the tack though Eh?

Whatever floats your boat, some stand behind the 'its your car and if you like it go for it and to he11 with everyone else' saying but geeze, 6" spike? OK, is that rusty, chromed, or au-natural? Whatever floats your boat!

Seriousely, tack as in attached however it can be done without any damage and it maybe being removable later...
