Default Ventilated grill in trunk

Is the black plastic ventilated grill in the very back of the trunk to aid or assist in ventilating the interior of the car? My car is a 05 Limited Coupe. That is my assumption but I would like more information than an assumption. I've searched on this site but have been unable to find anything. I discovered this grill while putting some sound insulation in the trunk under the carpet. I'm also wondering if this grill work could be letting a lot of road noise into the back of the car. Just a thought. Any ideas?

Thanks

Jim

You have found a vent for the car to equalize pressure when you slam the door. Woody

There are actually two of these vents, one in each well behind each rear wheel. They actually make a fluttering noise you can hear as you drive if the rear mats are out. They sound like leaves fluttering around in the trunk.
