Default Different gauge clusters

I've read that the gauge cluster from a Mercedes SLK 320 will interchange with our Crossfire gauge cluster but what about the SK 230 gauge cluster? Hope I have that model number correct as I'm drawing from my memory. If anyone has information on what WHITE faced gauge clusters will interchange, please let me know. I'm thinking that I will keep my cluster and just change the face of the cluster from black to white. The white faces are so much easier to read with old eye's.

You can easily change the numbers from green to white using this method CLICK.
If you change the cluster the mileage will need to be changed by a dealer or someone with the right equipment. JHM2K fitted an SLK320 cluster to an NA he had and could never get the gas gauge to work.

Dave - What I'm trying to achieve is to keep my cluster that's in my car so that my mileage and the other items all work as they do now. I just want to change the face plate on my gauge cluster to one that has the white faced gauges that the SLK 320's have. By changing just the face plate I think everything else will keep working fine and the mileage will be correct. What I don't know (among many other things) is if another model Mercedes gauge face plate will work on the XF gauge cluster. I've seen MB model 230 clusters advertised but don't know if they are the same as the 320's or the XF's. I'm assuming, I hope correctly, that just the face plate can be changed. It appears to be a seppart item from what I've seen and seems like it should interchange on re-assembly.

If you have any idea's let me know.

Anybody have any idea's on any difference between the MB 320 and 230 gauge clusters or face plates? Has anyone tried to just change the face plate like I mentioned above?

Looking at them on Ebay they appear the same. It looks like the face plates from either one should work. For 40 - 50 dollars it would be worth the try. If you do it, please document the process for others.

JHM2K changed his to white years ago, let me see if I can find his posts on it, it looked good.
He changed the whole panel to an AMG panel. But you can see what that looked like.

Someone else got the gas gage to work correctly, JHM2K never did, his car was totalled before he got that far. He was a great contributor here.

180 & ZERACER - If I get that far I will be glad to post my results. Thanks for the photo's, they look great. That exactly what I am wanting to do. My old eye's have a hard time making out the readings on the black face gauges. The white is so much easier for me.

Been checking online for the gauge clusters or just the face plates. Face plates seem unattainable. There's plenty of gauge clusters available but the salvage yard guy's must think they're made of gold. I mean, how much demand can there be for Mercedes gauges? They must be making money for them just sitting on a shelf. If the gauge cluster's are available, the rest of the car must be down the tube!

How about this combination, white letters on a black background?

NOTE: The left gauge is pasted in from a different picture

You could leave the kilometers the original green or black them out altogether.
Much cheaper and you have the parts already.

It has always irked me that the bottom part of the fuel level where its red isn't lit up. All he did if I'm correct, was sand off the backing of the red part?

There is a low fuel warning light, surely that is enough, how many nanny gauges does a car need?
29. Low Fuel Warning Light
When the fuel level drops to about 2 gallons (7.5
liters), this symbol will light and remains lit until
fuel is added.

Very nice! This is a great alternative to replacing the face plate. Thank you.

Lol. I know it’s trivial, just one of those things that always catches my eyes. I think the whole time I’ve owned the car, probably twice I’ve let it get low enough to turn that low fuel light on. I’ve seen too many posts of people running it almost to empty and then having their fuel pump go kapuuutz. You’re right though, we definitely don’t need more gauges.

Theres this company in Poland that makes LED gauge clusters for the XF. It’s in kilometers though. https://moman.pl/en/712-crossfire

ZX2 Nick - I realize this is an old thread, 2014, but if you are still onboard the forum, did you make any of these for others? It looks very nice and I presume it is much easier to read at a quick glance than the original. I would like to hear from you about how you made them, the material used, and if you still make them.

Thanks,

Jim

This could be a long post.
I am still onboard, sporadically, and I still have the Crossfire.
How much detail do you want?

ZX2 Nick - Really, just the easiest for you to rely to. I guess, how did you make them, and what material did you use, and do you still make them. They appear very attractive in the photos. I had thought of using the faceplate from a SLK 320 gauge but you can only get them by buying the entire gauge cluster and the salvage yards think they are made of gold. So that idea is out! At my age I probably should leave well enough alone and stay with the stock gauge faces except they are hard to see in the bright sunlight. Another old age plague. Anything you can tell me will be just fine. If you make them, can you make them white faced?

Thanks,

Jim
