Default Newport Ri Cruise

Does anyone have a problem meeting at the commuter lot IMMEDIATELY off the Jamestown Bridge (Rte 138) at 10am on April 26? Hopefully DAMSRT6 can fill us in on best local stuff. Mansions, parks, FOOD and photo backgrounds. Those coming from Cape may want to meet elsewhere as the Pell Bridge Toll is high.

Lets kick some tires

I don't have a problem with it. Can't wait for more details. If someone could find a mansion with a good driveway for pics and arrange for us to park and photo, that would be awesome.

Dittos on the clamshack. But hope it has other types of food (or near another type restaurant). Would mind a picnic/potluck type meal either.

Hi everyone!
I will be contacting the Newport Mansion folks about a group photo with our xfires in front of one of the mansions. They seem to be very picky about it. They may want a fee, not too sure. Anyway the photos can not be for commercial use!
The Pell bridge toll to Newport is $2.00

Well its nice to finally get the chance to get back on the forum, this tax season is killing me. Anyway, I'd like to thank blackxfire for his efforts so far in getting the Newport meet together. I wish that I could have helped more since I'm the local guy but for now I'll continue to help blackxfire with information gathering.

I'm not sure if blackxire reported back on the mansions but the fees are $1,000 plus for lawn pictures. I suggested that we should probably stick with one of the public parks which do not require fees or reservations (unless you're reserving a site). There are a couple great spots in Newport right on the water, Brenton Point Park and Fort Adams. Both will offer great opportunities for pictures with the ocean as our back drop.

Brenton Point State Park: http://www.riparks.com/BRENTON.HTM

Fort Adams State Park: http://www.riparks.com/fortadams.htm

I think that the focal point of the meet would be the drive down Ocean Drive:

Ocean Drive: http://www.oceandrivenewport.com/
(not the greatest site but it gives you an idea)

There is no shortage of restaurants either in Newport, our biggest probablem will be deciding which one to go to:

Thanks again blackxfire and if anyone has any questions or wants me to find out some info on a particular interest just let me know.

DAMSRT-6 where's the best place to meet? I was told the area right off 138 from the Jamestown Bridge wasn't a good choice.

Honestly I really don't know Jamestown at all. I'm much more familiar with the East side of the bay, Newport up through Bristol (my hometown).

How do the Connecticut folk usually go to Newport? Looking at a map it seems like 138 is the most direct route. Maybe all of the Connecticut cars should meet in Connecticut and then come through RI together. Otherwise Richmond RI is right off of 95 and I think there is a rest area around there.

The MA guys coming from the Cape should probably meet on route 24 south in Bristol, there is a decent rest stop there right after the Sakonnet River Bridge. After that it's a nice drive right into Newport.

The MA and NH guys coming from points North might also want to consider coming down route 24 and meeting at that same location.

The Seekonk exit might be a good place to meet, as you suggested to me via PM. From the exit we can take Rte. 136 down to Newport. I believe the route could take us over the Mount Hope Bridge to 24 South. We could take 24 down to Newport. Tool around there, maybe pics at a mansion and park and take the Pell bridge over to Jamestown. Jamestown is a nice little seaside town. I believe there is a parking lot that faces the bridge for a photo op. Then continue on over the Jamestown bridge to Rte4/138 reststop as a farewell point. We can stop for lunch where ever and when ever we decide along that route.

The Pell bridge has a $2.00 toll.
I am still working on a photo op at a commercially owned mansion.
If we take the Seekonk exit (#1) in MA., towards Rte44/E.Prov. Using that as a starting point. It's easy to find for "out of town" members and easy access to the highway.
There is a small service road right by the exit across from the Citgo station. There is also an inexpensive Shell and Mobil in the area.

Seekonk is a great option as it is very central. You can do exit 1 if you would like otherwise, as you know exit 2 will put you right on rt 136 in Swansea.

If you decide to go down 136 to newport through warren, bristol, and then over the mount hope bridge into Portsmouth i will meet you at some point along the way. I live about 4 miles from the mt. hope bridge and thats the way i go to Newport everytime. Once we get into Portsmouth, we could take east main road as it is pretty scenic passing by the vinyards.

GOOD NEWS!
So far I have an OK from the Executive Director of the Belcourt Castle in Newport for us to do a photo shoot. It would be for 11AM. Seems to be no charge!
They have a history of hosting car shows and seem to be welcoming to the idea. I believe they have an "L" shaped parking lot with the castle being in the background. They will also offer a tour and lunch menu. More info to follow.

http://www.belcourtcastle.org/index.html to view their site.

This is a major score for us! I have had a difficult time getting this arrainged at the majority of these properties in Newport. Seems they all think car clubs are going to wreck their lawns or something.

There is a 90% probability that I will attend with my significant other if you will accept a Long Islander in the rareified atmosphere of Newport.
