2008 owner recent clutch issues
Hi,
i am new here so thought this was a good place to start. I have a 2008 convertible that has been very good to me. One night I came out of work and when I cranked the car, I could not get it into reverse. It was a little cold outside and when it's cold, I can hear a spring or something "zing" when I press in the clutch. So I turned the car off and noted that I could go through every gear at ease so here is where I got stupid. I decided to put the car in reverse and then start the car! What came next was shocking. The thing jumped right out of gear and back in neutral. Well, I'm too curious for my own good. I tried it again!!!! Dont ask why.. I was talking to my GF and giving her the play by play. NOW WHEN I TRIED AGAIN, the CAR STAYED IN REVERSE and I could feel it pulling even though the clutch pedal is still depressed. Needless to say, I did not get it out of gear that day it backed her up into another parking spot.
So now the car is at the dealership and the tech says that the throw out bearing is not even touching. The dealer parts are rediculous and a kit is not really a kit. I looked online and found kits that included the release bearing / slave cylinder with the clutch. I was going to go factory but the difference is over double. What do you think of the RHINO set? I don't want to be cheap but I don't want to be a chump either.
Thank you all for your advice and Happy Holidays !

Re: 2008 owner recent clutch issues
I have not done mine yet, 157k miles.
There are some threads of what clutches they used.
Do you have the tools and capability to do it yourself or have to have a shop do it?
Did dealer price include the dual mass flywheel?
I have to looked for sure but have heard several times that the dual mass flywheel has to be changed also when clutch is changed.
Be nice if there is a normal flywheel that would work.
Heard ours is 80 - 90 lbs, which is the reason the wheel hp is the same between autos and manual, normally auto has 25% - 35% hp reduction to wheels and manual is 15% - 25% due to rotational weight.
I wonder if the flywheel and clutch from the penstar v6 is the same bolt pattern, the trans bellhousing will bolt up.

Re: 2008 owner recent clutch issues
Not sure what happened to the post I was just writing https://www.factorychryslerparts.com...5102783AB.html
the dealer broke this down into individual parts
5102783AB $795
5114332AA $850
whereas I can get a complete kit for $600 - $800
i want to do the right thing but is it worth paying double the price. As far as I see, this does not include the flywheel.
Would you go for the after market? If so which brand?
Regards

Update ; just found out that the flywheel is bad. Part is over a grand.
would you guys go with anything other than factory?
oh and you get what you pay for. The slave cylinder housing is plastic on the NAPA Part.
so buyer beware,
what will be the impact of this?
will it make a difference at this point to go with a combination after market clutch kit and factory flywheel?
thanks for your help in advance.

Re: 2008 owner recent clutch issues
I was always curious if the flywheel from a wrangler with the pentstar 3.8 v6 and pressure plate would work in ours and the clutch for crossfire, slk, r170.
both nsg370 trans but the nsg in wrangler has a different spline shaft so either change the shaft or use use r170 clutch with chrysler flywheel & pressure plate, but on flywheels I pretty sure they both have 140 tooth, 8 bolt flywheels.
if someone who had theirs out of there car to take it to napa and compare to one from a wrangle, would give more options, cost less and be a lighter flywheel, so less rotational weight, get alittle more hp at the wheels
