Anyone have information on a "Roof Control Modular" for a 2007 Roadster. I'm looking at the car this weekend and the person selling it said the roof didn't work and needed this part. Put my mechanic can't find any information it it. Mercedes says it was discontinued.

 

In the service manual it is referred to as the Power Top Control Module PTCM. I would be skeptical that it is the problem. If it is you would need to buy a used one off ebay or a dismantler.

Although it's possibly the module, I'm skeptical about that as well. How does the seller know that? I've lost count how many Craigslist car ads I've seen that say just needs a sensor, or something minor like that. After the sale, when that does not fix the problem, the seller will say too bad that is what I thought the problem was.

 

Unless it got wet, it is fine. The person selling it likely knows no more what they are talking about than you do.

Issues with the top usually are, in descending order of likelyhood:

trunk divider switch (easy)
top open switch (easy)
loss of sync due to an incomplete cycle or weak battery (just do the manual top cycle three times with the engine running) (easy)
Trunk lock failure, (little harder to trace but easy to replace)
BCM failure, (hard to track down, easy to replace)
PTCM failure, (hard to track down at times, easy to replace)
CAN bus failure, (sell the car for parts)

 

Thank you ..... I was suppose to look a at the car tomorrow ( Sunday ) but after talking to my mechanic and the response from the Forum, I decided to not go any farther was this one. I really don't want to start off with problems.

Yea, but if it's the easy fix I suspect it is, offer them $2000 less! A convertible with a non-working top is a liability on a car lot.

If everything else about the car is what you're looking for, then you might just make a great deal on it. My 2005 Roadster had a non-working top. The small, specialty car dealer that had the car found a Chrysler dealer who diagnosed it as a bad hydraulic cylinder on the top. But he didn't want to start down that route of fixing it. I let him look at it on his lot for a month and then I got it for about $1000 off at the end. I fixed it for about $300. Pizzaguy is right. Most of the time, the fix is simple but figuring it out is more than most people want to bother with.

If you want to throw out a price that you're looking at and the details on the car, the folks here are pretty reliable at telling you if it's a good deal or not....

 

Or one of us will go get it ourselves, fix it and sell it! I know of a guy in Nashville that bought a Red Roadster (that a dealer said needed a $1700 ECM) that had not run in over a year for $3500.
Put an RCM and battery in it ($250 total) and drove it home.

He cleaned it up and sold it for something around $6000.
