Default Challenger Test Drive

Drove one of the 500 Challengers allocated to Canada to-day. After reading some of the negative comments here I was sceptical to say the least. It is a big heavy car with great seats, understated interior, cool navigation/stereo system............But, when cruising on the highway it becomes exactly what its meant to be : a retro muscle car with with 21 st century technolgy. adequate handling and suspension, top of line brakes, acceleration is scary. The power in this car makes you forget the negative. thrilling to drive and the V8 rumble from the exhaust is priceless.

Just sharing my thoughts and opinion.

a local guy had one at the track the other day, to call the acceleration of it scary is a exaggeration lol. He was running at best 9 second runs on the 1/8 mile track. There are stock 4cyl cars running faster times than that. It is a good looking car though but all that weight really hurts it.

Paul, what are the Challengers going for in Canada. The average in the US is $47K. LMK, Chas

That local guy was either having severe traction issues or simply couldn't drive. My PT Cruiser Turbo will run 9.2 in the 1/8 and 14.4 in the 1/4. The Challenger SRT8 runs the 1/4 in 13 flat so 1/8 mile times should be low to mid 8s. While I agree that isn't "scary fast" it is pretty darn good for such a heavy car.

Heat, altitude and the fact that each car is going to run differently come into play. Just because one car under perfect conditions ran a 13 does not mean all of them will. Also, you are correct, a 13 is not scary fast, neither is a 12. Once you start getting into the low 11's is when it begins to get scary lol.

For me the acceration was impreessive. I'm just a guy who is to driving everday stock vehicles. Don't have the experience with super modded vehicles like PT Cruisers and SRT-6 s' . Didn't mean to sound like exagerating. Maybe "scary" is a relative term.

Not sure of the exact Canadian price. Somewhere in the $60s

I'm pretty impressed with the styling on these cars. My dad raised us with all kinds of muscle car and hot rod stuff around. We couldn't afford anything but it was always fun to look. I saw two of these possibly could be the same one but being a week apart and seeing one go past me by Wisconsin Dells and the other one near Monroe a week later is pretty slim, guess its only 80 miles appart but still cool for me.

It's a great looking retro car, although if the track figures above are correct, then the SRT6 should be able to beat it in the 1/4 mile.

I've thought since Chrysler built the Viper, they had the best curve on new car styling and working the retro look. I remember seeing the Viper GTS concept car at the LA Auto show and it just blew my socks off (especially loving the Cobra's and GT40's of the 1960's).

Hopefully thier financial woes doesn't prevent them from being innovative and bringing out new and fresh cars....only time will tell.

Brian

Yeah, I'm really not as impressed with it as everyone seems to be. I'd love to drive one, but would never pay for one. Not to bring up the old topic of what's fast and what's not, but a 13 second 1/4 mile wouldn't scare me either. I've driven a car capable of 11.6 @12x mph It just put a smile on my face and pressed my head to the headrest. I think a 3.99 @3xx mph would do the job of scaring me silly. Until Tony Schumacher lets me borrow his car I ain't never scared haha.
